Waitlisted at UVA

Postby Space21 » Thu Jun 30, 2011 9:19 pm

I was waitlisted and then rejected by UVA for its class of 2014. I've decided to take a year off, work and then apply to law schools again...in the hopes of nagging a top 14 law. I applied really late during the last admission cycle for all of my schools (early January). This time around, my G.P.A. fell by 0.03 and my lsat is consistently 5-7 points higher. What are my chances if I apply ED of UVA this fall? (I did not apply ED the first time around.) Thanks a lot for the advice.

Are you an URM ? I ask because your LSAT is quite low for Virginia even as an ED applicant. Even with an LSAT score increase of 5 to 7 points, your chances of admission are low. But, since you were waitlisted this year, there is some aspect of your application that Virginia found interesting, so an ED app can only help.

P.S. The lowest & lonliest LSAT reported on lawschoolnumbers.com was an URM with a 158 (& 3.5 GPA) which is higher than your current LSAT score.

Not a URM. My softs are very good and I graduated with a 3.9+ in math from a top 3 school. I was hitting 170 before my first take, but then I screwed up. Just trying to be modest in my expectations. Since they waitlisted me, a gain could not hurt.

+1. While your 3.9+ from a top 3 school is definitely a plus factor, it won't make up for a low LSAT score. You need at least a 165 (and an ED) to have a decent shot.

I'm not sure I agree with the LSAT target. Yes, OP needs to break 160, but given that he was already waitlisted with a late app (and we know how UVA love their early apps), his impressive GPA and strong softs have clearly impressed the committee.

Their 25% LSAT is 166 (if I recall) so it kind of doesn't matter what OP's LSAT is if he doesn't break that plane (i.e. anywhere between 160-165 is very similar).

Time to study up and aim for 166/7.

I said 165 based on LSN: http://uva.lawschoolnumbers.com/applica ... r=desc&p=7

It seems like a number of people with a 165/3.9X were admitted (albeit many were initially wait listed).

Yes, UVA's 25th is 166, and I realize that 165 does nothing more for UVA's numbers than 120, but we all know that someone with one point below the 25th has a much better chance than someone completely out of the range.

But of course, it would be best to aim for as high a score as possible.
