3.53/173

Postby splitterstatus » Mon Jun 27, 2011 6:57 pm

Hey TLS, a couple of questions. First off, just got my June LSAT score in and it was a bittersweet 173. GPA is low because I got a 3.0 and then a 2.8 during my freshman year semesters. Switched majors, and will now graduate with a double major in Poli Sci and International Studies and 2 minors in Spanish and Business. Will schools take into account my upward trend and major switch???
Will be a senior next year, so I guess I still have time to raise my gpa a little. Not sure how much Law schools take into account senior year GPA. I'm from a large public school in the South, not really that prestigious, but I've been fairly involved throughout undergrad.

Softs
-Princeton Review LSAT teacher and Tutor (Took the test once before this)
-Research and Translate for a professor (Will publish a paper in the Journal of Middle Eastern Studies with an acknowledgement)
-Founder and Pres of a nonprofit club at my school (Won't be fully up and running until next school year
-Fluent in Farsi and Spanish

I know it's all about the numbers, so I only included a few softs. Before you paste a link to lawschoolnumbers.com and lawschoolpredictor, let me say that I've already spent hours upon hours on both sites, and want a bit more insight. The predictor is really throwing me off, because the results don't match with law school numbers. Again, thanks for any advice, this sites been a big help. Go ahead and be as honest as possible, I don't mind hearing the harsh reality. I already know some of these schools are a long shot.

Also- If I wanted to ED, what would my best option be?

Harvard- just for fun
Stanford- the predictor says I'm a "weak consider" here, I don't believe this
Columbia
Chicago
NYU
Berkeley
U Mich
Northwestern
Cornell
Georgetown
UCLA
George Washington

You aren't really going to get a bit more insight. You are going to get anecdotal evidence from people with similar numbers (the very same people who probably also have LSN profiles) or you are going to get people making predictions based off of what they see on LSN/LSP. In either case, you aren't likely to get anything better than LSN. LSP uses slightly older LSN data and it generally is a weak approximation compared to looking at the raw data because it glosses over the finer trends. So ignore LSP and just use LSN.

If you wanted to ED I'd say pick your favorite of CCN. And all your softs (including your upward trend/major switch) are basically average and won't drastically affect your cycle.

Don't use lawschoolpredictor; just use lawschoolnumbers.

I'd recommend not using your ED on Columbia. It seems they really only use the ED for applicants who would pretty much get in anyway, but just want the assurance. Reach students, by and large, don't seem to fare well. NYU will be kindest, though UChicago may be trying to play catch up, and quickly since those Rubenstein funds will deplete in 2 years, which will ultimately reduce scholarship aid for the subsequent years (ergo leading to a lower "ability" to attract high LSAT students, using their current LSAT scores for matriculants as a standard.)

Guess I need to revise my question I was a little too excited with law school predictor at first.

With good softs, a low GPA, and decent LSAT, which should I ED to out of CCN???
Also, will the fact that my dad got his PhD from U Mich help my app there at all??? I heard the school has good national reach and I'd like to keep options open

1. Look at the ED applicants on LSN to CCN and pick whichever you feel you have the best shot at.
2. Doubtful.

If you want CCN, I'd ED to Chicago.

A couple people with similar numbers who were accepted:
http://lawschoolnumbers.com/Sentry
http://lawschoolnumbers.com/soupisgood

You also have a shot at NYU:
http://lawschoolnumbers.com/egmont
http://lawschoolnumbers.com/landpirate

But I think UChi >>> NYU.

I would say that proves that UChi >>>> NYU.

I applied from a similar type school, with a 3.49/173. Results in profile but... In at Vandy w/50k, GULC, Cornell, and Mich w/54k. Ended up getting in at Duke w/60k off the WL and decided to go there. I got a grade request from nyu which I never really followed up on. I think I could probably have gotten in there but I didn't really want to go there. My best advice with these numbers is to carefully consider whether you want to go some where at sticker. If this is the case I would ED to your favorite T14. If not LSN can give you a good idea of what your cycle will look like. Good luck.
