Georgetown PT- 3.7/Military

Postby lamamala » Sun May 01, 2011 6:00 pm

I currently have a 3.7 from an elite private university (top 10) in Mechanical Engineering and Political Science. I have relatively strong softs (including engineering research publications and community service work).

I am also an Ensign in the Navy working as a nuclear engineer in DC. I'd like to attend law school part time, preferably at GULC.

What LSAT range should I be shooting for? I scored a 155 on my first cold practice of the LSAT, and I need to know how much I should raise it to have a shot at Georgetown Part Time.

Thanks!

Unsolicited advice- skip law school. You have good options right now. Look at the starting salaries for DOD careers for applicants with military and engineering backgrounds.

Great comments, thanks.

I can say with certainty that I am going to be in DC for the long haul--my billet is somewhat of a unique one and requires I stay in DC for my entire initial Naval commitment.

I have very little interest in private practice at this point. I am far more interested in: 1) the policy process 2) working within federal government. I am hoping that GULC can give me exposure to both. I've weighed the JD vs. the MPP and some other substitutes that I can do while in part time. I felt that the JD would provide much more depth and exposure to these fields. I think the JD is also more valuable as a terminal degree.

This has been my logic thus far, but please feel free to poke holes in it. Your advice is appreciated.

lamamala,

On another thread here on TLS, some people who have recently gained admission to GULC PT program stated that the school intended to reduce the number of seats in the PT program going forward.

viewtopic.php?f=7&t=147287

If this happens I suspect that it will have a impact of increasing the difficulty level of gaining admissions to their PT program.

Good luck,

It bears mentioning that GULC does have a hard-on for the Naval Services. They had a few of Alumni Squids at ASW. Most of them had done part-time.

I also find that the naval services have a hard-on for GULC, more than any school but Harvard.

I think you are good with a 165+. You will probally pocket a lot of cash from Tuition Assistance, GI Bill (assuming you qualify, theres weird rules for officers), and scholarships if you can break 169.
