Chances? 2.8 GPA/179 LSAT URM (I think?)

Post by csalguero10 » Mon Jan 03, 2011 4:10 pm

Undergrad School: Cornell
Major: Engineering (Operations Research and Info)
Would that help to take the sting away from my 2.8?

I also got a 179 on the test, hopefully that helps a :?: bit as well.

Finally, my dad is El Salvadorian and my mother is Brazilian, so I don't know if those are URMs or not.

Looking to get into T14s, specifically NYU.

South American is not considered URM. Check out the stickies in the URM forum for more information.

Yeah but El Salvador is in Central America. If I really wanted to I could trace my ancestry to Mexico (according to my Dad, part Mayan and whatnot) but that's a pain in the ass I'd rather avoid doing.

Also, I'm looking to do IP law and am hoping that the engineering undergrad degree would help out in that regard. Or does that not really play a factor in the admissions process?

your 179 will play a factor in the admissions process.

URM is going to be tough to prove. Any valuable work experience? I think your best bet is to wait a cycle and ED next year to your choice of the lower T-14.

I'm currently working at a Non-Profit public policy research and evaluation company, I'm also planning on waiting for the next cycle anyways.

You'll probably get some sort of boost, but don't expect the full AA/PR/NA boost.

I know it's not NYU, but I've heard that Michigan has been shown to give a little boost to non-URM hispanics. You have a 179, so your chances are really, really good.
