HS Dropout Halfway Through Undergrad...

Post by RussianRN105 » Sun Dec 12, 2010 4:42 am

To be brief, I dropped out of high school directly after 9th grade, I hated it. I was never stupid though, when I was 19 I got my GED without taking any classes or a pre-test and scored in the top 5%. I have since gone through a year at a community college, before transferring to my current college. It is a medium sized state university, however I love it here, an I excel here in the student body. I am the founder of our GSA, and Young Dems on campus. I am now in nursing school working on my BSN, I have two more years left.

Going to law school is one thing I am certain I am going to do in my life. However, I have always wondered if my past will come around and bite me in the butt. I know I messed up in HS, but in college I have done very well with a 3.6 GPA, and a list of organizations and accomplishments to die for. Hell, I was even in the AJC and WSJ a few years back.

My passion is Russian, and I have done a few private study abroad trips to Moscow, over the last 3 years to study the language. I plan going to either Russia or Belarus for 10 months when I graduate to take a certificate course.

Also I plan on Joining Doctors Without Borders for a year as well, this has also always been one of my passions.

I was just wondering if this would be enough to get me into reputable law school. My heart is set on UGA Law, UNC Law, and everyones pride and joy Harvard Law.

I want to get into Law School by the time I am 27 or 28, I am 22 now, but I still have a lot left to do.

Do they really weigh those early years? I am so afraid for them to see GED, or the local technical college. I am so scared that all I am doing is in vain, and that my BSN, Doctors Without Borders, Russian, will they like my nursing degree, and my organizations will not make up for it. The longer I get through my undergraduate year, the more these ideas haunt me.

Any input from experience or anything would be great.

Thanks,

Chris

Oh yeah, I know I need to take the LSAT. I know I will be doing either Kaplan or Princeton's review, I guess with me now going into my 3rd year of undergrad I should plan on taking it summer of 2012. I know it is a lot of study, but if I can do Nursing School, I can do anything:)

You sound like a good kid. Nursing is a good major, and it will be a stable job. Doctors without borders-wow-is also awesome. If you're planning on law school in 5 years, don't worry about the LSAT now.

Schools won't care about the GED. In fact, of all that stuff you mentioned (the school activities, etc.), there's only one thing that they will really care about:
RussianRN105 wrote:3.6 GPA
And unless you up that GPA you won't have a shot at Harvard. Keep the GPA as high as possible and live your life. When you're 25 and decide you still want to go to law school, come back to this forum, see where you're at, see what the legal market is doing, and decide what to do next. Good luck!

I have a GED. I wrote my law school personal statement about dropping out of high school. Guess what? I'm going to a top ten law school next year. Law schools don't care about what happened in high school.

Concentrate less on your "softs" (Russian, etc.) and more on raising your GPA and kicking ass on the LSAT. Don't take Kaplan's prep course.

This is exactly correct. Take easy classes, get good grades, and take a good LSAT prep class. Your activities are interesting and worthwhile, but law schools care about your numbers.

BTW, I'm a dropout too, and I'm at a T6 with a fancy white shoe SA job locked up. No one cares.
This. If anything it will help you. All you really need are the numbers. Once you've got those, law schools drool over type of thing. And you can spin it as signs of your resilience. Other than things that might show up in your bar C&F, nothing in your personal past is really going to hurt you...

Probably because I really worried about this when I was halfway through undergrad. And I know lots of people who mistakenly believe that extracurriculars are a big part of the law school admissions process.

But good point. Probably.

Because I don't care? If it's real, then the person has a genuine concern that he's trying to get assuaged.

If its a "flame" then I lost about 3 minutes of my time reading and replying. Wow, how burned would I feel?

Yea it is..

ETA: I have a friend who ended up getting kicked out of her HS during her last semester for alcohol violations and was forced to get her GED. She ended up attending Carnegie Mellon and is currently attending Harvard for grad school. Moral of the story: schools dont care.
