A shot at money with 169/3.93 engineering UG
I have a 169 and a 3.93 from UF Civil Engineering. I looked on LSN and lawschoolpredictor, and given my chances applied around the first of November to every school between NYU and WUSTL (inclusive, from the US News rankings) plus BU and ND. I feel I have a decent shot at admission to all these schools, but I'm more curious about money. I know LSN lists scholarship likelihood, but how much is the probability of scholarship and associated scholarship amount affected by the engineering UG?
Basically, where do you think I have a good shot at getting meaningful money, and where do you think I have a good shot at getting a full or close-to-full ride?
Thanks much.

I think if you had 2 points on that LSAT you'd get a lot of money from the mid top 14 schools. I think you'd get a good amount at UCLA. If you have work experience, you may get a lot at Northwestern.

Yeah I hate my LSAT score...was practicing around 173-175 and absolutely cratered on test day. But it is what it is, and I am never taking it again.lakerfanimal wrote:I think if you had 2 points on that LSAT you'd get a lot of money from the mid top 14 schools. I have work experience during school (3 years of summer internships/co-ops) but no post-UG experience. Also, I think I have a good PS.

With your LSAT, it'll be tough to get big money at T14 since most of them have 170+ medians.

^I'm not going to retake. I'm also not hell bent on T14. I'm fine with T25.
Also, does the money I could get from schools like Illinois and MN make it worth sending apps their way?

I'd apply to UCLA, UT, and Vandy then. I wouldn't dip down much further than that unless you have some very specific goals and a clear plan.peter618 wrote:^I'm not going to retake. I'm also not hell bent on T14. I'm fine with T25.

Give it a shot. I didn't have your GPA, but your LSAT, and got a 1/3 scholarship from U of I and MN. WUSTL's worth a shot too. Do you have any particular place you want to practice? Keep in mind that going to Chicago or NY will cost a lot more than Champagne, IL or Minneapolis with living costs.peter618 wrote:^I'm not going to retake. I'm also not hell bent on T14. I don't think civil engineering is very sought after by IP practices, but I don't know for sureResolutePear wrote:Patent law?IAFG wrote:Civil engineering.eandy wrote:Um...with your GPA why on earth would you go to LS?

Yeah, I always figured it was more of an EE thing, though I've heard that any engineering major can sit for the patent bar.IAFG wrote:I don't think civil engineering is very sought after by IP practices, but I don't know for sureResolutePear wrote:Patent law?IAFG wrote:Civil engineering.eandy wrote:Um...with your GPA why on earth would you go to LS?

+ 1 Michigan will likely give you 45k over three years and Duke will likely give you 54k over three years.Slimpee wrote:A buddy of mine got $45k total from Mich last cycle w/ a 169/3.8something

Day-to-day engineering work is not for everybody, and it's definitely not for me.Um...with your GPA why on earth would you go to LS?
That's what I want to do. Even if they're not highly sought-after, I think I could swing it. We engineers all take enough of the same core classes that there's not a huge difference in the abilities of a mechanical/civil/electrical engineering UG upon graduation. And it is also true that to sit for the patent bar you simply must have an engineering/hard science UG degree.I don't think civil engineering is very sought after by IP practices, but I don't know for sureI don't think civil engineering is very sought after by IP practices, but I don't know for sureResolutePear wrote:Patent law?IAFG wrote:Civil engineering.eandy wrote:Um...with your GPA why on earth would you go to LS?

That would be nice; hopefully something like that comes along.+ 1 Michigan will likely give you 45k over three years and Duke will likely give you 54k over three years.

^Patent law; location and specifics aren't really important to me yet. I just know I don't want to be a part of the rat race - working 100 hours a week, hating my life, and all that.

Do you know any patent attorneys who aren't running the rat race?peter618 wrote:^Patent law; location and specifics aren't really important to me yet. I just know I don't want to be a part of the rat race - working 100 hours a week, hating my life, and all that.

This. It's a service industry - get used to long hours, even if they don't happen every day, month, or year.JazzOne wrote:Do you know any patent attorneys who aren't running the rat race?peter618 wrote:^Patent law; location and specifics aren't really important to me yet. We have identical numbers. I'm looking for the same thing you are and applying from Chicago through William and Mary. Hopefully somebody comes through with some money. LSN has quite a few 169, 3.9Xers with 100k from the top 20.
Seriously? What are you waiting for?
