Somewhat off topic OP, how bad is the academic job market for social science PhDs? I looked into the PhD route a while back, but was scared off by the horror stories of unemployment. Just curious.

Disclaimer: I have nothing to base this on but I imagine a PhD can really overcome a poor ugrad gpa. Depending on the discipline, getting a PhD is going to be harder than getting a JD so I don't see how they can hold it against you in any way without obviously caring more about rankings than bringing in the best applicants.

Still, based on LSP you have very slim chances. If you really want to go to Berkeley, and don't mine wasting some money, test how holistic they really are.

Yeah, I have already sent in my application, so we shall definitely see! As far as the job market goes-most of the grads from my program who have been interested in academic (as opposed to research) positions have had luck finding year long visiting spots, often followed up with tenure-track positions at the next school they look to. All in all, they have had decent success, though in my program we take a lot of statistics classes, which is a useful tool to have under your belt when looking for a job.
