3.5/165 intersting profile chances T14?

Postby Bpobryan » Thu Oct 07, 2010 3:14 pm

I've got a 3.5 from a top tier school and a 165 (1 test) with a personally written recommendation from a sitting governor (who i've worked with closely). Chances ED at G'town? regular admission at BU, BC, UC Berkeley, GWash Northwestern?

Define top tier school?

Berkeley is 100% out. Do you have work experience or are you coming straight out of undergrad?

Out everywhere in T14.

170 is the minimum you want for T14 with that GPA.

Retake if you have a "T14 or bust" mentality. But the idea you have to retake or suffer the consequences of unemployment is just absurd.

You're definitely out at Berkeley and Northwestern, and you have an outside (but not microscopic) shot at GW, BU, and BC.

It might be worth shooting an app to Wash U.

Where do you want to work?

Also consider shooting an application to Illinois if you happen to have had a hard major, they seem more receptive to these - I've known several 165s with GPAs close to yours that were accepted.

Paying sticker at the t14 is risky. Paying sticker at WashU, GW, BU, and BC is insane. Better off getting a full ride from a T2 or T3 at that point.

I would guess that you almost certainly won't get into Northwestern, Berkeley, or Georgetown. Your numbers just aren't in their ranges. You have a chance at BU/BC/GW. Many 165 applicants seemed to get waitlisted at these 3 schools this past year, so theres certainly no guarantees. And I wouldn't be surprised if they all gave you waitlists. But there is certainly a chance that one accepts you. If I were you, I'd make that 25-35 range where most of my applications go.

It all depends on how much money you have / how debt averse you are, does it not? Also, wouldn't going to a T2 or T3 just be riskier in general? (I ask this because I will most likely be choosing between a Wash U/GW/BU level school at sticker and some low T1s/high T2s on scholly).

No it really doesn't. WashU isn't worth 150K more than Loyola no matter how rich you are. At least in this economy. And not being debt averse just means you don't care that you are stupidly taking risks.

You aren't getting big law from WashU or Loyola ( well okay a 10% and 5% chance respectively). Not having debt is important if you can't make 6 figures at the end of school.

In 2006. I bet GULC isn't even 33% this year.

No shot at any of these schools since you're well below both medians. Either retake the LSAT or aim lower.

Is that sitting governor in Illinois? Because then there's precedent....

I'd be willing to bet this is very overly pessimistic. If cornell is close to 50% SA's I don't see how WUSTL could be worse than 25%. Everyone know GULC is TTT.

Well for one, WUSTL placed a huge portion of their big law in Chicago. And Chicago is massively fucked. Top 1/3 at NU isn't a lock for Chicago this year.

WUSTL was barely above 25% in 2005 according to NLJ250 data. I bet 15% this year would be optimistic.

4 years work experience for the person writing the recommendation.

what's the basis for "you've got no shot your numbers are below the median." yeah, so are 50% of the class. that's what the median is.

If it's the Governor of Massachusetts, then it may help at BU &/or BC.

Right, but 50% of the class is not below both medians. A 180/3.4 is "below median," as is a 168/4.2.

Also have Northeastern, American, Loyola Chicago, Hastings, UMD on the list. Assuming those will be acceptances.

The only people who are below BOTH medians at most schools are URMs, or legacies.
