3.58/170 helpp
Im graduating from UC Santa Barbara -not an amazing school- with a 3.58 and a 170 but I have one NP so my gpa will drop a bit. I have had a major upward trend as my gpa freshman year was a 2.7. Ive had 1 year long internship with merrill lynch, several seasonal ones with the DA, and the state senator as well as numerous extracurriculars. Furthermore, I've maintained part time jobs for nearly my entire time in university and I've also spent 1 year abroad in Hong Kong on exchange where I worked at an NGO. What are my chances of hitting in the T20? What is the highest ranked school that I realistically have a chance to go to and what else can I do to beef up my application before I graduate in Dec of '11?

Get straight A's, take the easiest classes you possibly can if that helps, and retake the LSAT.ag912 wrote:What is the highest ranked school that I realistically have a chance to go to and what else can I do to beef up my application before I graduate in Dec of '11?
The highest ranked school you can get into will be determined by an LSAT retake and what you eventually drag your GPA up to.

Really? We're advising people who scored a 170 to retake now?
Next thing you know, TLS will be petitioning LSAC to make the max score 200 so we can advise people with a 180 to retake.

realistically im going to hover somewhere around a 3.58 if I average a A- (worst case scenario). What school(s) would be realistic at this point? I'm hoping to stay in California (Read: UCLA/USC) also, im guessing being asian is a downside like UG?

You will have a pretty good chance at several schools in the T20, and better than even at the lower end of the T14.

It's not a downside for law school, it's just not an upside.
You are likely looking at the lower half of the T14 (MVP are possibilities but most likely Cornell/GULC), but take a look at http://www.lawschoolnumbers.com to see what others with similar numbers to you have gotten.
If you want a better shot at MVP and a shot at CCN then I suggest retaking. A 172+ will definitely be a big difference, imo.

Are UCLA/USC viable at this level? Also, a 2 or 3 point increase will knock me into CCN territory?

For 3.6's at NYU this year it looks like a rejection at 170, a waitlist at 171-172, 50/50 chance of acceptance at 173, and a good lock on acceptance at 174+.

That NP will count as an F, so you probably have a 3.45-3.50 depending on how many credits you have. A GPA below 3.5 is really going to hurt you, so you need to work on raising it this year.
If you hit 172-173 you've got a shot at CCN.

A+ is 4.33, so each one will probably boost your GPA by about 0.01, but a single F can drop you by 0.05 to 0.10.ag912 wrote:i have 5 A+'s, those are a 4.3 right? they should mitigate the impact of my F, no?

Check to make sure your school gives 4.33's for A+'s, some of them don't give out higher than a 4.0.ag912 wrote:i have 5 A+'s, those are a 4.3 right? they should mitigate the impact of my F, no?

Good point. I'll bow out of that because it isn't really something I have much experience with.ag912 wrote:doesnt the LSAC recalculate my gpa though?

It'll help significantly, but it won't make up for it entirely. It'll make your F look more like a C- or a D+ in terms of its impact on your GPA.ag912 wrote:i have 5 A+'s, those are a 4.3 right? they should mitigate the impact of my F, no?
Good luck.
