Chances at University of Houston, Baylor, and SMU? 3.7/164
Just wondering what my chances are at these three schools.
University of Houston
Baylor
SMU
I have a 164 LSAT with a 3.7 and I'm a Mexican male. My letters of recommendation are fairly good and I am currently working on my PS. The only downside to my application is that I have been arrested twice for theft. Once for a class B and the other for a class C midemeanor. I plan on writing an addendum.
So, what are my chances? Will I get into these schools? Any chances at scholarships?
Any thoughts/suggestions are greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

Law school numbers doesn't take past arrests into account, though. I'm wondering how that's going to affect my application.
Anyone else have any thoughts?

apply to a lot of places, aim higher maybe also--with your stats and URM status you're a wildcard--also not knowing how schools will take the arrests id apply to as many places as possible

Drop Baylor, you don't want to go there. Would you rather work in Houston or Dallas? SMU will probably bite big and give you a nice scholarship. Though you can also make it in to other very good schools as well. Perhaps even UT if they give a slight Mexican URM bump. If you get UT and want to work in Texas, go.
Not sure about T14, probably not very much chance at that. Do you want to work / live in Texas? If so, UT is the best choice, and then it breaks down by city.

Calling someone a douchebag won't encourage other posters to offer advice, so I'd probably tone it down a bit. With your numbers, you have a competitive shot at SMU.abarrios wrote:Hey thanks for the help, douche bag.Grond wrote:http://lawschoolnumbers.com/adrib/jdabarrios wrote:Just wondering what my chances are at these three schools.

That's funny yeah that guy is a douche. I hope you get in to whichever school you want. As long as you explain how you have matured you should be good. Yeah a 164 is no joke. Good luck. Are you a resident?

you're in all at all of them. the guy who posted the LSN link for you was trying to be helpful- he posted a specific link to a specific user that has the same stats as you do pretty much. a good addendum and you'll be fine.
best of luck to you OP!

And yea, I plan on applying to UT as well as a bunch of T-14 schools for fun. I am expecting my cycle to be unpredictable because of my record and the fact that I am Mexican.

2) Biglaw placement out of Baylor is a struggle, due mostly to the fact that it's not in a major market and pulls up the rear behind UT, then Houston/SMU.
3) They have grade deflation so severe that the dean actually sends out a personalized note with each resume stating why GPAs at Baylor are lower. (This makes no sense to me; why put your students at a disadvantage?)
4) While the rest of 3Ls will be out networking, making connections in the legal community, and enjoying their last semester of law school, you'll be stuck doing 8 hours of work per day for "practice court". Considering when most good legal jobs are acquired, this is an unnecessary pain in the ass for students.
5) Baylor fosters a gunnerish/cutthroat atmosphere that sucks to be a part of. This probably has to do with job placement issues, so students know they need to outgun classmates to have a shot.
6) Baylor is incredibly expensive for what it is.
7) Waco is a hell hole that's both ugly and boring.

Insulting people who are trying to help is a good way to discourage other people from helping.
The arrests may make your cycle even more unpredictable, but I would think you're in good shape at all three. UT is probably a decent reach.
And apply to Baylor even if you would not want to necessarily attend there. If you get into both Baylor and SMU but only get money from Baylor, you can use that to try and leverage money out of SMU.

Note bolded. And yes, you can. You cannot speak for certain on what schools he will and will not get offered a scholarship at...scholarships are even more unpredictable than admissions. URM status makes both admissions and scholarships even more unpredictable. Stop making such confident statements when all you have is educated guesses.kalvano wrote:Richie Tenenbaum wrote:If you get into both Baylor and SMU but only get money from Baylor, you can use that to try and leverage money out of SMU.

SMU doesn't negotiate. I'll be there in the fall, and I tried to get extra money out of them the previous 2 cycles (09 and 10). In 09, I couldn't leverage a significant scholarship at a T30 into a dime from SMU. I'm a URM, btw.Richie Tenenbaum wrote:Note bolded. And yes, you can.
