Chances at Arizona- 2.6/171

Postby treydog » Sun Jul 25, 2010 11:05 pm

At the risk of boring everyone with typical 'what are my chances stats', here it goes. Currently a UG (senior) at Arizona and will likely finish with an LSAC 2.6 GPA. LSAT score is a 171 and I am URM. I work full time and finishing my bachelor's in an evening non traditional program. I know that UA is a low level T1 and I am quite the splitter, so I don't know how much I can trust the calculators that I've seen online. GPA trended up and I have a 3.88 in my current program (started school over), but LSAC combines all grades. Any ideas about my chances at Arizona Rogers school of law?

My best guess is that you will be admitted to Arizona so long as you explain that fulltime work hampered your undergraduate GPA & that you will not have significant, or any, outside employment during your first year of law school.

You're aiming too low, imo.

Thanks for the responses.

@ BK: I was picking Arizona or ASU because I ultimately want to end up in Phoenix. I am not so much striving for a national job although I would take a great opportunity outside of Arizona (So.California, Atlanta, Dallas); also, the law school predictor that I checked kind of put me in that 30-50 range (and Arizona was with ed, which they are discontinuing soon). UCLA has me at weak consider and Emory has me at deny. They are also on my list. Any insight into a national job graduating out of Arizona?

I haven't got too many bites on this post, but I wanted to add another query to go along with the initial. Can my stats get me any money at any of the schools I listed (particularly Arizona and ASU)?

with a solid app and possibly a GPA addendum, I don't see why you wouldn't be able to gain admission at arizona.

On the other hand, many So. CA schools weigh GPA much more heavily than LSAT scores, so idk about your chances there. I believe with a ED app, you have a good chance of breaking the T20 if you have any schools in that range you like.

Aim high and cover low, so you don't have to ask yourself "what if" at the end of your cycle...

I think you're definitely going to get into U of A and ASU. As far as scholarships are concerned, hard to tell. You're a pretty unique applicant. How many 2.6/171/urm applicants apply to U of A per year? Somewhere around 0 I'll bet. I wouldn't be shocked if you got a full-ride, but who really knows.

If your goal is working in Phoenix, this is questionable advice. T20 is a pretty meaningless distinction. The best firms in Arizona have plenty of U of A grads. When you factor in the low COL in Tucson and potential scholarships, U of A is a solid choice if you want to stay in AZ. I may be a little biased because U of A is the only school that offered me a full-ride but from what I can tell it places pretty well in Tucson and Phoenix.

Going to a T20 is not "questionable advice" for working in Phoenix.

It just depends which T20. But if your goal is to work in a big firm then T14 + Texas + Vanderbilt + maybe UCLA/USC are all worth attending over UofA/ASU.

If I were OP I'd ED to a CCN or MVPDCN range school.

Point taken. If your #1 goal is a big firm in Phoenix, U of A is a dicey proposition. Some firms don't hire outside the top 5% or so of a class at U of A. At the same time, going to a school like WashU or Iowa isn't going to guarantee anything either.
