Grades from 1994, 13 year break... Chances.

Post by aabuster1 » Thu Jul 15, 2010 11:35 pm

I had two semesters from 1994 where I had just gotten out of high school and my parents forced me to register for college. I was young what could I say ? I registered and never went, got a full time job and then got out of the house. I'm still working on how I'm going to play this up in an addendum; any advice on that would be good.

My real question is how will these grades play out with law school committees (2 Semesters, around 27 credits worth of E's from 1994) ? Will they be willing/able to overlook them since they were so long ago ? My grades since 2007, when I went back to school, have been all A's except for 4 credits worth of B's. I'm also 35 years old - not sure if that will help or hinder my chances. My LSAT isn't phenomenal only a 155 first and only time. Schools I'm looking at mainly interested in are Kentucky and Hawaii, with about 18 other schools on my longer list.

Any thoughts ? Any advice ?

Thanks in advance.

I did quite a lot of prep (several months) for the LSAT, 7 books or so and then the "actual prep test" books for time practice LSATs. My practice scores ranged from 149-157, one anomalous 163. Only section I can improve on would be the games section, I only get about 11-13 correct from that section, I run out of time and bubble in guesses for 2 of the 4 games. The other sections I don't miss many on nor do I run out of time. I don't think I could do better with only self study since my score was about the average of my practice tests and the day of the test was a good day.

I do have 1 more free test I could take, LSAC waiver, live under the poverty level (Schooling is how I intend to get my family out of poverty) - - My only concern is making lower than I did the first time (If that even matters to the schools on my list). Your advice to retake the LSAT makes a lot of sense.

With my situation I'm finding it hard to pick "realistic" schools to apply to and "safety" schools. Are the schools going to look at me as a 3.95 student with bad grades from 1994 or are they going to look at me as an average student with an overall 3.33 GPA. It makes such a huge difference on the admission statistics. Then there is my age, will that affect my admission - will I be considered diversity because of my age ? I will likely be the oldest person in the class.

Thanks again for all the replies and the PM I received.

I've decided to try to find time to practice up on the games section. Then if my practice LSAT's get higher consistently I'll register for one of the next LSAT's if the scores I get on practice tests remain in the 154-157 range I'll keep practicing and hope a lot on my applications.

if you are worried about your grades from 1994 write an addendum briefly explaining your issues and how you overcame them.

Since you did the responsible thing in 1994 ( skipped class and got a job instead of skipped class and got wasted) I am sure adcoms will forgive you, and possibly let you in.

If you think you can do better, re take the test.

cheers

If the only section you are doing bad on is LG... I personally think that you can improve your LSAT... tbh it took me awhile to understand the concepts behind the LG section... I was like you missing a whole game or two at first... but after a class/completing the powerscore logic game bible it started all to make sense... eventually LG became my best section.
