Re: 3.92/179 Chances at HYSCCN?
With no work experience, I'd apply more broadly than just the T10.dfec737 wrote:Hey I've been following this forum for a little while now but have yet to really begin posting, so bear with me. I took the LSAT for the first time this past June of 2010 and did significantly better than I expected. I had originally always planned on aiming for one of BMVP, but now I plan on blanketing the T10 and deciding from there. My softs are okay but nothing extraordinary: Over 100 hours of certified tutoring, V.P. of University Econ Club, some volunteer work, intramural captain, honor societies and substitute teaching. My personal statement should be fairly good (family crisis making me who I am) and decent LORs. The UG university I'm attending is nothing special, just an average public university, probably a little outside the top 100. With all this in mind (mostly unimpressive UG, mediocre softs and applying while still in UG) what kind of chances/options will I be looking at? Any advice on steps to take now until I apply in the fall?
I really appreciate any input and I will gladly share my experiences in the coming cycle. I will also be more than happy to give out any LSAT related assistance/advice, as well as what worked for me specifically. With all my tutoring hours hopefully I can be of some help to future test takers.

Pretty guaranteed at H, good shot at YS, in at CCN.
And LOL at the above.

If you can't figure out that you have a great shot at these schools, then you have serious problems. Just apply to every school in the top 14 and see what happens. You will definitely get into several with scholarship offers. Don't post here about your cances again.

Assuming you're not fishing for compliments.... Hmmm, 3.92/179 undergrad with a history of adversity (family crisis, as you mentioned)?
Well, I hear the social life is pretty dull and there isn't much to do in New Haven but I'm sure you'll survive with your Yale Law degree.
Congratulations on your numbers and your hard work. It will be rewarded.

If they don't let you into HYSCCN then who would they accept? The 25 people who had 180/4.0? (Is that number too low or high?)

You're practically guaranteed at H, and you've got as good a shot at the black boxes that are YS as anyone could hope for. I agree with the others, only reason to apply out of the T6 is if you're looking for a free ride. I applied with a 3.95/176 and was accepted to all of the T6 except Yale (albeit Stanford was off the waitlist, but still) with really nice scholarships at CC, if that gives you a frame of reference.dfec737 wrote:Hey I've been following this forum for a little while now but have yet to really begin posting, so bear with me. Sorry if this came off as a post fishing for compliments or along those lines, I honestly didn't mean it to be like that. I was mostly trying to get to the point of whether my relatively unknown university and lack of WE/amazing real-world experiences would hurt my chances at the T6. I apologize and was kind of worried it would come off like this.

Oh, and neglected to mention, I was also applying straight out of undergrad with similar softs (I noticed that was a concern of yours after re-reading the posts). You're going to do great. Good luck!pleasepickme wrote:You're practically guaranteed at H, and you've got as good a shot at the black boxes that are YS as anyone could hope for. Blanket all the T10 schools you'd actually want to attend, enjoy getting to choose between T6 or $$$ at lower schools. (Expect UVA and Penn to YP you unless you write really convincing "Why X?" essays.)
Law admissions these days is heavily, heavily numbers-based, and you've got the numbers. Make sure you don't make any stupid typos or anything in your app, but as long as you take care of that, enjoy what will be an awesome cycle.

Haha, don't worry about it I was just giving you a hard time!dfec737 wrote:Sorry if this came off as a post fishing for compliments or along those lines, I honestly didn't mean it to be like that. You are right to assume that mediocre undergrad may have some bearing in the "black box" that is admissions at Yale and Stanford but your numbers are phenomenal.
Furthermore, if your "family crisis" has in any way motivated you to become a better student or to dedicate your life to being the best you can possibly be you will be going to Yale no matter where you graduated from in UG.
My congratulations were honest. You deserve to be rewarded for the work you've done.

3.92/179 and you think you have a chance at Y/H/S? Is this amateur hour?

True 4.0/180s are probably around 10 if not lower, yeah.Hey-O wrote:What do you think? 10 a year?acrossthelake wrote:My guess is too high.Hey-O wrote:If they don't let you into HYSCCN then who would they accept? The 25 people who had 180/4.0? (Is that number too low or high?)

Then I would think less than 10. I wouldn't think that half the people who get 180 have 4.0s.altoidz wrote:around 20 persons a yr get a 180
