Apply to a "deny" school?

Post by escapefrom » Mon Jun 28, 2010 7:17 pm

Is there a point to applying to any schools that LSP deems a deny? Would there ever be a chance that a non-URM could get into a school for which LSP calls for a deny?

I mean I'm sure it does happen, but it won't for you.

If you click on the "Accuracy" tab on the website, you will see that about 13% of people rated as "deny" get accepted.

This.

You only get, presumably, one chance to apply to law schools, so go for it. But, it makes little sense if predictor says "Deny" for top 30 and you want to apply to Harvard for the fun of it. But if you are "Consider" for 15-20 and you want to apply to a couple 11-14 that say "Deny," then well that's at least reasonable.

Do you have money or a fee waiver? Might as well.

I think it depends. If the school has a notably holistic admissions process, it might be worth it. Back when I applied, LSP put me at a deny for Berkeley. I applied anyway, was accepted, and came extremely close to attending.

Where'd you go then instead? If LSP put you at deny for Berkeley surely that was the best school you got into, no?

FWIW, I used a "deny" on LSP as a reach school and I applied to three of those. I chose schools that were ones I'd be really proud to graduate from.

I got dinged at two, accepted at one with no WL and I'm attending them in the fall.

EDIT: I'm also not a URM.

Congrats. Did you have great softs? Where'd you get in and what were your numbers if you don't mind me asking?

I think my softs were good enough to get adcomms to look past my numbers, which were an extreme split. I had four years of progressively improving work experience including promotions into supervisory roles, increased responsibility, and top rankings in my division for production (I work in financial sales).

I used my PS and my GPA addendum to clearly advertise that I had transitioned from a poor student facing significant adversity into a serious professional who had triumphed over adversity. That's where I think I was able to win them over.

I choose to remain anonymous but I will say this: my school is outside the T14 but is a regional/state powerhouse in an area I want to practice and my numbers are too embarassing to post with all the recent 3.9/180 threads I've been seeing.

Doc Ellis is a great American pitcher and a close friend of mine. On June 12th 1970 he waltzed himself into a situation where everything in his bones said not to go for it, but he did, and he cut himself a special slice of American history right then and there pitching a no hitter while high as a Georgia pine on LSD...

If Doc Ellis can do it, you can do it.

I was admitted within two weeks of applying and got $ from a 'deny' school. Use LSP combined with lawschoolnumbers to see if you have any reasonable chance.

I think you should definitely let an Internet computer program determine where you apply to law school instead of your own desires and hopes.

Me too...but not within 2 weeks.

As others have said, I think it depends on the school and how holistic their approach is.

But if you want to go to the school, apply!
