3.75 / 175, HLS chances?

Postby GWolfe703 » Mon Jun 28, 2010 7:06 pm

Hey TLS, now that June scores are out I'd love your input on my chances. I have a 3.75 ugpa from a top ten school which is known for being pretty rigorous, and a brand new 175 LSAT score. Not much work experience or any special college activities to speak of, that area of my softs will probably be below average. On the other hand I have some above average LORs lined up, and my PS should be really strong too. With my lack of interesting activities or accomplishments to flout I feel like Yale is pretty out of reach, and my GPA is probably too low to afford me a decent shot at Stanford.

So here's my question: what do you think my chance at Harvard? Also my LSAT is slightly lower than I averaged in PTs, with my average being 176-177 (For some reason I missed a random smattering on the games section on the actual test). With HLS being my goal would it be worth it to retake and try for the one or two extra points, risking a possible lower score? No matter how much someone preps I think it's pretty hard to reliably get over a 175.

Besides HLS, what does everyone think about CCN and BMVP?

Thanks for your time and help.

I have literally exactly the same stats as you. I'd love to hear answers as well

Some chance if from a truly prestigious UG, I think. Good luck.

probably waitlist at H... in at CCN... possible yield protect at MVP... no idea about B.

I know you said T10 UG, but did you go to Cornell?

Nope not Cornell, it is one of the non-Ivy top ten, with a reputation (deserved or not) of being quite tough.

You raise a point that I hadn't thought of Booyakasha, namely yield protection. I like the sound of MVP, though I haven't visited any of them yet, so I'd like to miniimize my chances of being rejected because my numbers are too high. Does writing a good "why X" essay usually prevent a waitlist/reject on the basis of yield protection? If not then what does? Again, I appreciate all the help.

I thought UG didn't matter?

Some people (not sure how true this actually is) say that Harvard will consider a sliiiightly below-average gpa if it came from a prestigious UG. keep it in the family, you know.

Seems like from my experience last cycle, UG can help with HYS and Chicago mainly...

And it doesn't have to be like the T5 UG, usually getting a high gpa from an UG fin the T20 seems pretty beneficial. However most of the effect seems to be for people with like 3.9 GPA and a slightly lower LSAT (say 171,172).. With a 3.75 GPA the chance will be slimmer, although I think the OP still has a fairly decent shot.

Aw boo. Got my hopes up there.

@OP: Our numbers are similar. From my own research my thought is Y & S are out, H waitlist-->???, and CCN in.

I believe this is true. If the GPA is above 3.7 and the LSAT is at or above the median and the UG is really, really good, there'll be a shot.

Well not too get your hopes up too much, but it should definitely help you out slightly even with a lower GPA, high LSAT...

the only problem is that HLS seemed to shift to a higher GPA focus this year, resulting in a lot more of waitlist/rejections for the 3.8, 177+ type then previous cycles

Yeah. I watched can compared what happened with the new dean of admissions and saw my hope dashed. Ppl often don't put type of undergrad up on LSN enough to draw any conclusions, so I was curious.

It's alright. I'm completely happy with my safeties as well.

So the consensus seems to be that retaking the LSAT and bumping it up 1 or 2 points won't make a world of difference to Harvard? That with my 3.75/175 the prestige that admissions attributes to my undergrad is potentially a more important factor? I obviously don't want to take the test again, and if it wouldn't give me a noticeable bump at Harvard I guess I won't.
