Chances w/ 2.7 UGPA and 161 LSAT

Postby Acumen » Thu Jun 24, 2010 12:43 pm

I'm on a serious persuit to find out what law school to attend. I'm well aware that my GPA does not reflect the most brilliant individual, but I do believe I have a nice resume to assist. I've worked on every level of government and in the legal field. Yea, i've taken full advantage of student internships! Alright, so give it to me straight, what are my chances with 2.7 UGPA and 161 LSAT?

Chances at what? What school do you want to attend?

Where do you want to practice? What state do you have residency in?

With those stats you are looking at regional schools, so this is very important.

I guess I did leave out some valuable information. I'm attending school at a smaller 4 year school in south Gerogia. I've looked at John Marshall Law in Atlanta and Mercer University. What do you all think about those or would you suggest others? I'm not opposed to leaving the state if need be.

Assuming a retake, hitting 164 & going to UGA is not an option, here is what I'd say:

Mercer is okay if you get nearly a full ride. Your LSAT is great for them, but I'm not sure they give out lots of $ to people with GPAs below median.

Check out Georgia State for cheap in-state tuition. May be looking at a WL there, but it is not out of reach.

You would probably get a tuition equalizer (in-state) for South Carolina, if you wouldn't mind practicing there.

Leave John Marshall off the list. Don't even apply there.

That is some good advice. However, I'm wondering what is wrong with John Marshall. I assumed it was a decent school given that it did just geet full accredidation and has to build its name up to par.

From my experience, you can expect to get a lot of waitlists.

Below is a link to my LSN profile if it helps any. I didn't apply to any schools in GA and applied both FT and PT mixed, so I'm not sure how much it will help you. Good luck with your applications.

Gsu is your best shot. I would also recommend a retake and look at uga. John marshall gets a bad rep, due to the saturation of the atlanta market and proximity of other more reputable schools, but the quality of education isn't bad. The problem with it is the price tag. For what you get, there are much better investments in the same area. Mercer isn't bad either, they might give you a fat check, go there if you can pull a ride, otherwise gsu is likely the best option

Thank you for all of your feedback. For a moment I was not sure if it was even plausible for me to attend law school but now I'm seeing that it is. Someone told me that since I am also an African-American male it will assist in me getting in. Now I'm not saying whether or not this is fair for those who don't get this edge, but if you were in my shoes wouldn't you take advantage of it as well...

Then go work in a high level of government. You are too stupid to get into a decent law school.

@Desert Fox and Ty Webb It is sad that there are individuals like you in the world that would rather criticize than assist the miss guided. An educated person that doesn't know how to relate to others is a waste. Read Dale Carnegie's book, How to Win Friends and Influence People. It may help you out a little.

Now that I have established the levels of government for the class please do tell how I was incorrect? Don't worry I'll wait...

My advice to not go to law school is the best advice you've ever gotten. It'll take 4 years and 200 thousand dollars to figure it out though huh.

Just because I know TTT's are horrible, doesn't make me a know it all. Though I do know everything.

Agreed. I also don't believe that you've worked in any meaningful, paying capacity within the Federal government (this is given your ability to write, spell, and form thoughts, along with your GPA).

You're better off with a federal government job than taking this law school dive at Mercer or John Marshall. The fact that you "thought" John Marshall would be a good choice is evidence that you haven't spent nearly enough time preparing yourself for this process.

My pursuit is to go into a smaller firm in Atlanta. Didn't mean to get into a war of words, but I'm just in clear opposition to people belittling others for any reason at all.

I do it for the Lulz. If you really want a small firm, retake, and go somewhere that gives you a full ride. Small firms pay very poorly.
