172/3.58

Post by smoneill88 » Mon May 17, 2010 8:13 pm

Soooooo taking the June LSAT, have been averaging PT scores at/above a 172, and honestly, this post is a little selfish, as I am undoubtably going to use this thread mostly for motivation on the test, but also I want to know what I can expect as I start my essays in the next few weeks, and where to allocate my precious $$ for application fees.

Recap: At least 172 on LSAT (keeping the predictions conservative) and 3.58 GPA (with a severe progressive trend, for the past 4 semesters go almost 4.0's)

Softs: 5 years real work experience in the entertainment industry, part-time and full-time, including internships at CAA and NBC/Universal (for those of you not into entertainment, NBC/Uni is a studio, CAA is the #1 full service agency in the world). Obviously my intent is entertainment law.

Top Choice: UCLA (willing to early commit)
others:
USC
NYU
Georgetown
Columbia
Mich
EDIT: And Berkeley (Boalt)

 Also, open to suggestions for other schools to apply to that could be good choices for entertainment.

Thanks.

Sean

With those numbers, you have a shot of getting at least one of CCN.

I don't know anything about entertainment law, but what I've heard of specialties is that you should still just go to the best school you can get and just OCI with firms you want. I don't even know if those firms would go to CCN though, so UCLA might still be the best choice.

Would Boalt be a possibility? It would be tough with that GPA 'cause they're such GPA whores, but I'd hesitate to take UCLA over Boalt for Cali. If you do apply to Boalt, be aware that they put a ton of weight on the PS (unlike most other schools, who basically use it to say "this person is not crazy").

I would be hesitant to ED to UCLA. Those numbers are good enough for admission in a normal year and you should be able to get them to cough up some cash. Just don't screw up the application.

Thanks for the input so far. More opinions would be appreciated as well.

I was thinking about Boalt, but from some of the sites I figured I was out due to GPA, but if I'm wrong, hell, I'll throw in the extra $75, because I know they are a great school (and I love SF/Bay Area, I'm a socal kid with relatives up there). I'm going to edit my post to include Boalt to get some opinions.

Thanks for the advice RE the ED, if you don't think it's going to hurt to much then I will plan not to.

Again, more opinions the better, lets increase my sample size for this advice.

I wouldn't ED to UCLA. You've got a very strong shot at NU, possibly with a bit of money, and I think you'll have options in the T14. If you really want to ED somewhere, I'd pick one of CCN and hope for the best.

Columbia, Chicago, NYU. Commonly considered the next "tier" behind HYS (Harvard, Yale, Stanford).

it might take a convincing personal statement and a few letters of continuing interest, but I think that in the end you will get in to NYU.. columbia.... not so much.

as for UCLA i'd apply regular decision. michigan and georgetown are both good bets, USC is your safety, and dont hold your breath for berkeley.

People have given you pretty good advice. If you really want to weigh your odds, check out LSN and search by GPA/LSAT ranges. Aside from that, come back with a real LSAT. The likelihood of anyone hitting a projected score based on PTs is pretty low, and your chances would change significantly at several of these schools with just a 1-2 point swing either way.

Thanks very much for the input.

I'll probably be posting again once the test is actually done if things change (thanks for that added pessimism avocado, it was exactly what I needed  ) but I'm highly confident about the test.
