What are my chances (obviously)?

Postby UAKAVA » Wed Feb 10, 2010 6:42 pm

Hey all,

I wanted to get some feedback on what you think of my chances at the following schools. First off, the #'s are LSAT 166 (no repeats) and LSDAS GPA 3.00. Non-URM, male. I have grades that are all over the place, ranging from a solid 3.8 semester to a 2.65 freshman year. I also have a D on my transcripts that I received from a math course that I took while in high school at a local community college. 2 good letters of recommendation, solid resume but little work experience (pretty much straight volunteer work/ greek life/ student government). I am in my last months of undergrad at a large state school, relatively well thought of academically and ranked # 1 in Philosophy nationwide (my major). I seriously doubt they will give a sh** about that though. So far I've gotten into Catholic, DePaul and U Kentucky all with mid to small sized scholarships. Now for your part:

U Iowa
U Alabama
U Georgia
Wake Forest
SMU

These are, in my mind, my reaches (maybe SMU is a target but I have no clue). All went complete before Feb 1st (all around Jan 28th) so I am currently playing the waiting game. What do you guys think?

Forgot to mention that I am a traditional, four year plan student. Yay for me.

Honestly, the numbers aren't in your favor...you are probably looking at some WLs and maybe outright denials. But it would probably be worth it to try just to see. 166 is a decent score, one of those schools may bite if they can take the hit on the GPA. Splitters are hard to predict, just apply and have no regrets.

Edit: Nevermind, I see that you already applied. You may have a shot at Bama, their 25% for GPA is pretty low. You will know soon enough, good luck.

Hi, UAKAVA I believe you are in at some of those schools.

I applied to Wake, SMU and Alabama and believe they are interested in students above 165. I also got a 166 and got in to all those schools. (I have a higher GPA).

I like your chances at UGA and UA. If you applied in October I would have said in, with the late application it may take awhile. You might end up on the waitlist but eventually I think you are in.

Just as an update, in at University of Denver with 18000 scholy. Doubt that affects anybody's assessments though haha, thanks for the replies. I heard SMU starts sending out acceptances, WL and denials next friday but that could be forum BS. Kind of like the "exact science" of predicting when the LSAT comes out...

I am really shooting for SMU at least, I hope I can pull it off. I can take solace in the fact that 65% at SMU is better than the usual Vegas odds at least T14_Scholly right? ;)

I don't know if this means anything (seriously), but I noticed that SMU has admitted 163 out of 166 applicants who have had my numbers (165-169, 2.75-3.25) historically. It's on the LSAC site under the ABA info page for SMU. Of course now that I've said that I'm going to make it a 163/167 record ha.

I was admitted last week, so were some friends of mine. Your admission package might be in transit. It has a fancy binder and some interesting stuff in it.

Well then I hope I get that binder! My app status still only says app completed so I don't know what the deal is with that. U Denver never changed and all of a sudden I get an email with my acceptance and scholy so maybe SMU is the same i.e. doesn't update and then you hear back? I'm not too nervous though, if I don't get in to anywhere better than U Kentucky I'll still be happy with that. Hell, before I got my LSAT score I was looking at T3's so I've come a long way.

The GPA and the lateness of the apps are a bit of a concern, but I'd imagine you'd be in at UGA. They've drawn a line in the sand, your LSAT brings you over it:

If this was earlier in the year I honestly would have said in at all of the above. Your GPA isn't stellar, but I think your LSAT makes you desirable to all of these schools. I;m gonna be a little more optimistic than some of the people above and say in at all but one. I don't know which one though cause splitters are unpredictable.

Mine did change a week before I got my package. I withdrew yesterday so there is one more spot available.

Ah for sure, well then I guess I am still in for a wait. I really wish I could have gone complete last November but I had to wait on my final recommendation so that kind of killed the early application cycle for me. Shame too, as most people are saying that really would have helped me. Waiting for your cycle to complete is worse than the LSAT wait, damn senioritis kicked in hard after the UK acceptance.

Luis, did your status change to "Decision Rendered" or something of the sort? Or was it an actual acceptance change on the checker? Anyone else know?
