Are you paying full price at your current school? What do you want to do with your degree?

I know the school, and it's expensive. Any chance you would consider transferring to a nearby Long Island/NY school that's cheaper and T2? You've got Hofstra, St. John's, and Brooklyn as options. They're all T2 and a bit cheaper, I believe, but you'd have to look into that. I don't know how transferring works but with that sort of GPA maybe you can transfer into Cardozo or Fordham? Either way, you have several options if you want to move up the rankings and possibly at a better price, without relocating or traveling too far.

I am a 25 yr old 1L from a T4 school in NY (long island to be exact). I am URM and did horrible on my LSAT. I wanted to start law school so bad this year that I decided to go to school instead of taking another year to retake the LSAT. By God's grace, everything worked out well. I just got all my Fall 2009 grades back and this is the breakdown for my grades:

A+ Torts (3 credits)
A+ Contracts (3 credits)
A+ Civ Pro (2 credits)
A Criminal Law A (3 credits)
A Legal writing A (3 credits)

My school gives out a 4.0 for an A and a 4.33 for an A+, which makes my cumulative GPA a 4.19!! My last grade just came in today so I havent got my class rank (school doesnt start until monday) but I can only imagine what I will be!

Heres, my dilemma: People are telling me different things. What realistic opportunities do I really have here?? I am looking to stay in NY because of the wife's job/family. Obviously I will look into transferring as an option. Where are my options? Where should I apply? If I do stay, what should my school give me to make it worth my while?

** sorry for the dual post, not sure which forum this should be in
Great job!! The thing is, even number 1 (which it seems like you have locked up) at Touro usually will not get you into NYU or Columbia, however, you will be automatic at Cardozo and have a shot at Fordham (although Fordham's transfer class is hard to enter). You are an urm, which might get you into one of the big 2, although I'm not sure how urm status helps when it comes to transferring. I'd think you would at least get a little boost, if not a substantial one. If I were you, I would pepper the entire top 20, however, it seems like you must stay in NYC, which is a hard prospect for transferring from a t4 school as I don't think giving up #1 status at Touro is worth going to Cardozo and starting over. Good luck and congrats!

Touro will miss you.

You will get into SJU, Hofstra and BLS for sure, though its questionable as to whether any of those are substantively 'better' than Touro. If you have a scholarship at Touro, don't leave it for one of these options.

Fordham is a real possibility and should likely be the one you target. If you get into Fordham, even if you have to leave a scholarship at Touro, its worth it.

Columbia and NYU are really a toss up. Frankly, the high GPA and the URM status make you competive for either, if you wind up in the top 5 to 10% of the class.

Apply around and see what happens. Get your letters of rec ready and move on the applications ASAP this spring.

Stop using '!!!!!' it makes you look like an ass.

First, congratulations! Seriously. Damn.

Are you getting a full ride at Touro? I would first ask about the possibility of getting $$$, should you decide to stay. I know of at least one Hofstra ---> CLS transfer, and even at a T4, as a URM with numbers like that, I have a feeling you have a reasonable shot at CLS/NYU. My roommate and I think you are almost certainly in here. I don't think you'll even have to think about schools ranked below Fordham, though you might want to have safeties if you are sure you will transfer.

RM: Odds on OP getting NYU or CLS? If he has a repeat performance next semester, I would put money on it.

I would tend to agree (assuming a similar performance next semester). NYU and CLS would likely love to get their hands on a URM that is a proven law test-taker (i.e. unlikely to hurt their bar-pass numbers).

If the best you could snag is my 51 year old mother, I feel bad for you my friend. Kindly depart and go do some homework for your 200 level sociology class now. The big kids are trying to talk about the Ops options.

Uh, I'd be aiming a little higher than SJU if I were you. A 3.9 at Touro last year was accepted into Columbia and 1) that person wasn't URM and 2) that person listed themselves as being in the top 5% with that GPA, I wonder how high that makes you.

This.

Do not waste time applying to anything below Fordham. Assuming continued excellent performance next semester, you should only be sending those apps to CLS, NYU and Fordham.

WOW are you serious!? OMG I feel so much pressure now to have a repeat performance. I thought this would let me relax a little bit because I literally studied 24/7 this semester, ugh!
What type of URM are you? With that type of GPA and URM you are basically a lock for NYU or CLS. NYU and CLS take a BOATLOAD of transfers (like 50 each every year). You should get in no problem.
