Splitter chances 2.81 / 171

Post by Lonagan » Mon Dec 28, 2009 10:40 am

2.81 LSAC GPA / 171 on LSAT that just came out
2 years WE consisting of national park service, senate campaign, and currently a legislative aide
No URM
No softs that are going to wow anyone other my winning personality and dry wit.

I am looking at:

Reach
Northwestern
Cornell
Georgetown
William and Mary
Notre Dame
Boston University
Boston College

Target
University of Washington
Minnesota
Wisconsin
Colorado
Illinois
Washington University
Wisconsin

Safe
Northeastern
Pittsburgh
Oregon
Lewis and Clark
Chicago-Kent

Do I look more or less reasonable on my assessment? Any schools that you look at and think "no chance"? Like everyone and their brother, I am looking to send apps within a day or so. Thanks a million for anyone who can help me!

Are your apps ready? If yes start sending asap. If they aren't ready don't rush just to get them out a week before everyone else.

You've got a good list of schools picked out. Would you really attend those safeties? Don't waste the money if you won't really go there. Sometimes its better to reapply if you strike out than go to a lower ranked school.

I would definitely go to Northeastern, Oregon, Pitt, and LC if there was money.

Thanks for the advice.

Good luck. Hopefully I'll see you at northwestern next year.

That would make my day, especially if your avatar is a real life portrait :)

So, wound up applying to, with predictions):

Northwestern (WL-in ... optimism!)
University of Virginia (reject)
Georgetown (WL-out)
Notre Dame (reject?)
William and Mary (in)
Washington and Lee (in)
Boston University (WL-in)
Boston College (reject)
University of Illinois (in - $$)
University of Minnesota (in - $$)
Washington University (in - $$)
University of Denver (already accepted, unsure of scholly offer)
University of Pittsburgh (in-$$)
University of Oregon (in - $$?)
Lewis and Clark (in - $$)
Northeastern (in - $$?)

Only schools I would pay sticker or close to it at are probably NW, UVA, GTown, and maybe ND. Given the choice between one of those and a healthy scholarship at any of the others I am not sure how I would decide. I think my debt aversion is mitigated by prospects of IBR.

I tried to put this up on LSN for others' benefit, but it doesn't seem to be showing me on there. I.e. my Denver acceptance does not show up on their graph for this cycle.

It's not too late to ED to UVA, they've extended the ED deadline to March 1. You might get in if you ED.

I would say ED to UVA and apply Georgetown PT.

How much of a difference does Georgetown PT make? I think I might take that advice on UVA ED.

I don't think GULC will like that low GPA, with a 3.0/170 they put me on a WL, and bluntly told me they had a special "preferred" WL they pull from first and I wasn't on it. From what I've seen from other people I think they frown on GPAs below a certain threshold.

However, you could try EDing there if you ED to UVA and UVA rejects you. That's the beauty of these delayed deadlines. I think you can mark both on your application, to be considered FT and PT, and they'll offer you PT if it's available but they don't want you FT.

It makes a huge difference on your chances, if you really want this school you should apply to part time only. You're probably either out or waitlist/out for full time, with part time you have a good shot of making it in. I just got accepted to the PT program at GT with similar numbers to you, 2.99, 170 and I know there's no way I would have been accepted to full time.

I would also advice against checking both boxes. This is just anecdotal, but according to Nealric, a Georgetown 3L, if you check both boxes, they will assume you have a preference for FT and just waitlist you.

Since I don't attend GULC and this poster does I will defer to his judgment re: PT vs. FT at that school. OP, probably wiser to take this advice than what I just posted myself, in this case.

I hadn't really given any consideration to part time law school.

Is a part time J.D. viewed any differently for job placement / clerkships? Any idea what kind of work you can take on if you go part time?

I'm not completely sure, supposedly it's not viewed any different except that your summer associate period would happen after 3rd year instead of second year. It seems like a lot of people do paralegal type jobs while going part time.

Also, as of now (this could change in the future), it's very easy to change from PT to FT after your first year. You just send a form to the registrar and take two extra classes over the summer.

That seems like a pretty big back door to leave open. Isn't the 1L summer job fairly important though?

Yes, but the 2 classes during the summer can be in the evening, so you can still work your 1L summer. This is currently my plan, but I'm open to going PT all the way since it would mean a little bit less stress each semester.

Seems like a pretty workable option.
