Berkeley ASW 2012

Postby EvelynS » Tue Feb 14, 2012 9:55 pm

Did not find anything on this year's ASW, so decided to start a new topic. Did anyone book tickets and rooms?

Well, I didn't book tickets or rooms (since I live just an hour away), but I'll definitely be going!

I guess we would enjoy the weather  DC and NY are pretty cold in winters and early springs.

Is there a facebook group for the Berkeley 2015 class? If not, we should make that happen! It would be a good way to coordinate, especially with those people who aren't TLS.

Glad this thread finally popped up. I was too lazy to start it.

I'll definitely be flying out there from the Midwest. Looking forward to it because I've never been to California (never had a great desire to go before now tbh).

I'm kinda of angry because UCLA's (diversity) weekend overlaps with Berkeley's ASW. Yeah, they're both part of the UC system, and it's simpler to have the (traditional) admit events close together so people can stay in Cali and not have to fly back twice...but really?

I blame UCLA - they have 2 admit events, yet chose to have the diversity weekend on the one which interferes with Berkeley's only ASW.

Waiting to figure out how to cram everything in before booking my trip...

I also saw in a last year's thread that Berkeley students were willing to share rooms with 0L for ASW. However, I am not sure if and how it would be announced.

I don't have a driver's license, so I will try to find something within a walking distance from the campus.

Not sure, but it seems like the student sharing program was an unofficial volunteer thing done via a Berkeley Law Facebook group? Some schools (Duke, Emory, etc.) have an official setup where they offer certain admitted students a chance to stay with current students. I don't know if Berkeley does the same thing - but probably not. UCLA doesn't.

I think I'm going to try to find a decent hostel/hotel in the Berkeley area and take public transit. I have a license but parking is supposed to be a nightmare around the school. And, it's best to experience the public transportation system since it will probably be a part of normal life.

Last year the admissions office reached out by email to admitted students to offer to link them up with current students who had offered to host an admit for AWS.

They are going to reimburse us for the flight there, correct?

Is there anyway to get from SFO to Berkeley besides taking a cab? It's pretty pricey

BART

It costs about $4.50 to get from SF to Berkeley (at least it did when I lived there a few years ago).

I'm flying into SFO and going to take the BART to Berkeley (never done before, so hopefully I don't get lost).

I am 100% banking on students volunteering to house 0L's like previous years, so if that doesn't happen again I'm screwed lol.

I'm looking forward to meeting everyone. I'm currently trying to decide between NYU and Berkeley and ASW will be a large factor in my decision.
Its pretty easy to get around using the BART system, just be aware that there can be fairly long waits between trains at certain times of day (and they don't run 24/7 either).

NYC does not usually have this issues (unless there is a snow day or a heavy rain) :)

How long does it take to get to SF and from SF to the airport? I was thinking to walk around a bit before my flight back.

Berkeley to SF is about 15-20 minutes depending on where you want to go. Berkeley's about a 5 minute drive (sometimes less) to the Bay Bridge and once you cross you're in the city by the bay! SF to the airport is about 15-20 minutes I'd say. SFO is in south san francisco; your trip would go something like this: Berkeley --> Cross Bay Bridge --> Arrive in SF/Downtown -->Pass through Daly City/Pacifica --> Arrive in South City/SFO :D
