Columbia
  • must email Office of Admissions in advance to request a travel subsidy
  • up to $250 based on distance for airplane, train, bus, or mileage

To get the Columbia subsidy, you have to stay until 5:00 pm on Thursday, meaning you'd miss the first day of the NYU ASW if you intended to go to both. :|

A bit of a bummer, but if I actually get the subsidy... then saving $250 is well worth it.

Yeah thinking about it for a while has me planning to stay at Columbia all day Thursday. I'll have all of Friday to check out NYU.

Are you still planning on attending the late-March one? Right now, my attending is sort of contingent on whether I receive the subsidy (submitted Friday -- no idea how long they usually take to respond to the request). But, if I do get it, then I will for sure make the late-March one.

It'd be hard to justify spending ~400 on checking out a school that I'll almost certainly end up attending (be it NYU or CLS).

Soj, would you consider also making this a list of seat deposit dates?

Do you think that would be helpful? Almost all seat deposit dates are around May 1, well after ASWs. One exception I know of is Chicago, whose $500 seat deposit deadline is April 15.

You're probably right...I guess I didn't realize the dates were so uniform.

Thanks for making this whole thing though!

Thanks. I didn't make the whole thing, though--TheWatch did 99% of the work. But he's not on TLS anymore, so I've been updating it since Saturday.

All of my seat deposits are around April 20th or before...so I think there is definitely variation.

Columbia doesn't automatically give people subsidies. I was denied despite being an income-less undergraduate 1500 miles and a $400 plane ticket away from NY.

Damn, that sucks! Did you fill out FAFSA and NeedAccess? Maybe they use those to assess need.

I hadn't done that yet (I wouldn't qualify for need-based aid anyway). The form they ask you to fill out allows you to explain your circumstances/why you need the subsidy. It didn't ask for parental info but did ask if you were going to apply for financial aid (I said I would in later if Columbia blew me away). Maybe this is a new age where parents are expected to pay travel expenses for their offspring until the age of 30.

It is not cool that Columbia asks people to blow $200k going to school there and won't spare relative chump change to help them make that choice. The fact that the subsidy is advertised so prominently on their website makes their stinginess sting more. Getting let down after getting excited for the visit was rough.

Maybe you'll have better luck than me! Let me know if you get it.

BC now has two dates. The added one is March 23rd (so now their two dates match BU's - March 23 & 30, identical programs).

Who do you email for the subsidy, and do you know how they determine it?

I called to ask about it and they referred me to the admit email address that you can find inside the admitted student's website. I emailed there and was then given a form to email back. The form asked why I needed the subsidy, whether or not I had applied or was planning on applying for financial aid, what weekend I wanted to visit on, whether or not I was planning on visiting other NYC law schools while up there, and whether or not said schools were subsidizing the trip at all. They said they take need and distance into account on their subsidies. This struck me as real vague, especially since they didn't demand parental financial info for the need side of it. Maybe it depends upon whether or not the adcomm in question has had enough coffee that morning; idk.

On another note UVA will throw $400 at anybody flying in from west of the Mississippi for their ASW. Other states get $250. Dumpster Columbia.

I reserved a spot for UCLA's ASW (travel covered by UCLA) and am wondering if it's possible to use the travel stipend to visit UCLA another weekend? I am afraid it might be rude to ask, but am legitimately interested in UCLA and Berkeley (whose ASW happens to be the SAME WEEKEND)! I live on the East Coast and think it will be really important to visit both schools.
