We don't have a surplus. We just lost a huge chunk of money from public education in an attempt to balance the budget. We're still doing better than a lot of states, but surplus is an exaggeration.

in what sense? i dont see the estimated deficit as a huge problem. it'll get balanced, and part of it is due to the amount the state has to put up for the new healthcare bill. we have a rainy day fund and something similar has happened before, but with less (maybe not) hooha. though ill agree, the corp tax under-performs even what lawmakers planned for it to do, so lets get it up to par...(although a financial plus for TX is how it draws in businesses from states like CA)

I think the deficit is indicative of a larger problem. Texas is portrayed as some magical land of opportunity, so a ton of people move here. However, the state is set up to be very business-friendly at the expense of being able to provide services to people.

Texas can't continue growing the way it has AND supporting all the people without enacting some form of either state income tax or cutting business tax breaks, which will stop any growth because those are precisely why people move here.

Also on the subject, unless you are coming from a heavy-tax state like New Jersey or California, Texas really isn't that much cheaper. Sure, you can buy a nice house for $120K in Bumblefuck, East Texas, but to actually be near a city where the jobs are, you are going to pay not much less than what you pay everywhere else. Then when you add in our ridiculous property taxes, homeowner's insurance (highest in the nation, we're #1! Go Texas!), very high auto insurance, higher sales tax, etc., it really begins to even out.

oh and while i do think there should be fewer business tax breaks (slow down growth, not eliminate it completely), keep in mind that TX had an unemployment rate that was not worse than NY's...but we had like 3x the number of people move into the state in that year (disclaimer: i dont remember the exact numbers so these are kinda out of my ass, just what i kinda recall).

lulwut? houses in the suburbs really arent that expensive when you compare to places like NYC and DC. and yes, for most purposes, we ARE talking about places like NYC, Cali, DC, NJ, Chicago -- thats where ppl will buy houses for their major mkt work, not Wyoming. why would we? thats just like Bumblefuck, East Texas. Don't even get me started on the real estate in FL lol.

To be near a city (30min drive), you can live in a very good suburb for <$250k easy. i mean, i dont know what cities you're comparing to, but i imagine the only relevant cities are the ones in primary mkts or large secondaries...and those are not cheaper than TX at all...my expenses in Boston do not come close to evening out my expenses in Austin or Houston.

i do support lowering tax breaks, which may slow down growth, not eliminate it -- but even then, our unemployment rate was not worse than NY's while we had like 3x (i dont remember the multiplier) the number of ppl move into the state that year. so they are getting jobs at least.

Yes! Grew up in Texas, did UG in Chicago, and I'm headed back to SMU in the fall. Efff snow drifts. Give me my 98% humidity and 100 degree heat. I can turn the A/C on, but in the winter my feet are ALWAYS cold, regardless of how high I turn up the heat! I love flip flops and tank tops! I'm so stoked to go back.

On the subject of rednecks, I always thought I was some fancy, better-than-them liberal, but when I moved to Chicago, I realized there are trashy people everywhere, some just wear Sox jerseys instead of Rangers jerseys.

I was afraid I'd stick out like some crazy hillbilly up here (I use that term quite proudly, I, as stated above, hate shoes, love flip flops), but I have made tons of "Yankee friends" who I will be friends with for the rest of my life... and I'm bringing my Yankee boyfriend back to Texas with me. We just embraced our differences instead of fought (and it was quite fun to bait the liberal girl who thought I was one of Rick Perry's advisers, and yelled at me for everything he did.)
