Is anyone else staying with current students? I'm trying to figure out what an appropriate/thoughtful "thanks for letting sleep on your couch" gift would be. Bottle of wine? I dunno ...

I bought a Vera Bradley pencil case and put some new highlighters inside of it. I'm sure a bottle of wine would be fine as well. If they are picking you up from the airport, gas money would probably be appreciated too.dudders wrote:Is anyone else staying with current students? Re: W&M ASW
Count me in as well. I will be arriving late Thursday and checking out the area Friday before the reception. I will be around Friday night as well ( so long as my work doesn't dump a deadline on me). I at least want to meet the fellow TLSers if I can't make the get together.
I too got a steal on a hotel not recommended by the school. $30/night at America's Best Inn. Probably ghetto, but cheap nonetheless.

I e-mailed the school and they said dress comfortably and that business casual would be more appropriate then a formal suit. So there you go. I will be wearing business casual.2010law wrote:Was wondering how everyone is planning to dress for Friday and Saturday.

I am coming from Richmond VA - if anyone needs a ride around 5-6 PM on Fri night - and back after the event - let me know.
I am staying at student's housing and definitely wanted to do an afterparty after reception but was not sure how it would look if the guy wanted to go home early and a then a moderately drunk admitted student would be banging on his door around 1 am.

I always get a little nervous when they say business casual... obviously I wouldn't wear a suit... but would khakis, a nice shirt, and a cardigan be appropriate? Or should I throw on a pencil skirt?

Re: W&M ASW
I was just planning on wearing a casual skirt, shirt and flats. I don't really know if that qualifies as business casual though. I may need to reevaluate my outfit choice.

Pencil skirt sounds more professional. I do not believe that you should worry too much, as you are in, regardless of what you wear (well, almost, I guess). Slight depatures from what they expect you to wear might slightly affect their initial opinion of your, but that opinion will not have impact on your success at ls at all.

Re: W&M ASW
Hi guys, current WM student here.I'm fine w/PM'ing you guys w/my first name and what I'll be wearing closer to next weekend so at least y'all can find me. Are people interested in hitting up one of the bars/delis afterward?
If the ASW Friday social is like what it was last year, you guys will have name tags, and you will be in the lobby with every other admitted student who chose to attend (probably anywhere from 100-250 students [its a large lobby]). Maybe it'd just be easiest for you all to do something like put a check mark or an x in one of the corners to indicate you're from this thread and looking to meet up with fellow TLSers.
Have fun. My roommates vetoed hosting a visiting student so I'm not invited to attend the party.

* at the top left corner of the nametag sounds good to me.
Unfortunately, coming there only around 6, as I am a working man living near.

Re: W&M ASW
No disrespect - understood that there are people with WE coming
We should definitely all meet up at the reception and maybe go to the bar afterwards though.
I hope my gradplex host does not have a curfew. I was thinking about bringing the guy a gift, but then I kind of feel that they might be forbidden to take it or something.

Re: W&M ASW
The gradplex is set up like apartments rather than a dorm building. There is no security guard or monitor that checks people in or makes sure people aren't bringing in alcohol or shutting the door after 11PM or something like that. Each apartment has its own entrances, the residents(students) have the keys. There is no curfew, and alcohol is not forbidden. I live there.APHill wrote:I hope my gradplex host does not have a curfew. I was thinking about bringing the guy a gift, but then I kind of feel that they might be forbidden to take it or something.
The majority of people wore business casual last year. Everything from nice polo shirts to nice button down shirts and ties. Guys, you really can't go wrong with a button down shirt and tie. If you want to wear a suit, you won't be out of place because the faculty and student representatives will be wearing them (I suspect they are encouraged to dress up a bit). As for girls... well, I don't even know what business casual entails for women, sorry.

bus casual for girls is very wide - but you cant go wrong with a button down shirt (not buttoned down for gilrs of course) and a decent professional skirt or women pants.

No tie for me, if they say business casual and be comfortable then I am leaving the tie home. Jeans I think would not be a good idea. Slacks and a button down for me.

Re: W&M ASW
1) I called and spoke to admissions and was told Khakis and a nice polo are perfect. I was told I SHOULDN'T wear a jacket due to (a) it's going to be a long day and (b) some of the rooms we will be in might get a little "stuffy and crowded". I was told that if I wore a jacket and tie, I would "most likely be very uncomfortable and take them off after a bit". So, with that in mind, I will be wearing khakis and a nice polo.
2) so are we in agreement, an "*" in the top corner of the name tag?
Looking to meeting all of you this weekend.
