I'll be flying in from Oregon and landing at the Cedar Rapids airport. I'm staying at the Motel 6 just because it's cheap ($41/night). I'd definitely be interested in hanging out on Saturday.

I'll be there, driving to Iowa City Friday morning, live close enough that I'll probably just be driving back later that evening. Would be interested in a TLS meetup.

Flying from NYC to Cedar Rapids. Robin and I are scouting apartments after the events on the 26th, but we're both staying until the morning of the 27th.

Will be there all day Friday - I'm local-ish, so won't be getting a hotel that night -> let's have the meet-up Friday if everyone's up for it.

PS. Please provide a detailed report of all apartment hunting experiences!

I'm (most likely) coming too, schedule permitting! within driving distance, and probably staying until Saturday. I'd definitely be in for Friday!

I'll ask the student whom i've been emailing for suggestions. Near the reception or school or what?

Near the school soonish after the program ends? Does that work for everyone?

I live in Iowa City so I'll be there. Unfortunately, I'm leaving town that Friday after the ASD, so I won't be around to meet up. For those who have never visited Iowa City, it's a great town. I hope you enjoy it. I did not go to undergrad here, but I've spent plenty of time here over the past 5 years and love the city. Right now, I'm extremely bored at work so I figured I'd offer some suggestions/advice on the bar scene in Iowa City. Some of this is specific to meeting up Friday afternoon and some of it is more general.

The law school (along with many of the grad schools) is on the west side of the river and nothing is extremely close to it. You'll probably want to head downtown to meet up. It's just across the river and not too far from the law school - 10-15 minute walk or a short drive (although parking can be a minor issue, but nothing compared to big cities). Iowa City bars are interesting because many allow 19 year olds in. This creates 2 categories - bars swamped with 19-20 year old freshman and sophomores and 21 and up bars that are (slightly) more mature, catering to the grad school crowd more. I'd highly recommend sticking to the "more mature" bars. The 19-20 year old are a blast at certain times, but in general I think most law students will enjoy the 21 and up bars more. This won't be as big of an issue for meeting up on Friday afternoon, but is more of advice for going out at night.

I'd recommend the following for meeting up on Friday to grab food and/or a drink. These are all in downtown.
The Airliner - bar with great pizza. Probably my top recommendation and also a great place to go in the evening.
DCs - cool sports bar, decent food, 21 and up in the evening so it generally draws a slightly older crowd
Quintons - great sandwich and soup place, far side of downtown so it would be a little farther, not as popular of place for going out at night
Martinis - cool bar with an older crowd, better in nice weather when they can open up their outside, I'm not even sure if they serve food, but fun place to go out at night.

The 19 and up bars that you generally want to avoid are The Summit, Fieldhouse (3rd Base), The Union and Etc. (sketchiest bar in Iowa City. Avoid it). The exceptions in this category are Brothers and Jakes. Both are 19 and up, but students of all ages still go.

However, there are a ton of bars in Iowa City and they obviously don't all fall perfectly into those 2 categories. A really cool thing about Iowa City is how close most of the bars are to each other, so you can bar hop throughout the night and checkout different places.

Another great place to eat that is not in downtown is The Vine. They serve typical bar food and have incredible buffalo wings. It's a short drive from the law school in an area called the Coralville Strip that is full of restaurants, shops and businesses. At the far end of the Coralville Strip is Coralridge Mall, the primary shopping area for Iowa City. This area has grown tremendously in the past 10 years and is fairly nice. The mall is about a 15 minute drive from the law school.

Obviously these are just my opinions, but I hope they are helpful. Let me know if you have any questions about Iowa City. You should be able to look up any of the places I mentioned and see what you think.

Flying into Chicago and driving there Thursday night. I'm staying at the Fairfield Inn in Coralville. Doesn't seem like there is a very packed schedule on Friday, so I'll probably drive around and get a feel for the city.

I might do this as well if I can get the time off work. If you are renting a car can you tell me how much that runs you for the trip there and back?

Does the school offer a housing tour?

P.S. Can you drive me too?

Pretty sure I will be there for at least Friday and would definitely be interested in meeting up with some people at some point. Doesn't sound like too many people will be there for the Thursday night reception, right?

I will also be attending. I'm flying from Miami to Chicago, then to Cedar Rapids. It's going to be a long flight. I will be there from the 25th-28th and staying at the Hotel Vetro. It's a little expensive, but its worth the price.

Excited to meet all of you. Keep me posted on meeting up.
