I am trying to schedule some prospective student visits and admitted student visits in February. If I were a guy, I would wear khakis and either a polo, sweater, or button-down (probably a button-down with a sweater over it). But for girls it isn't as simple - there's nothing like khakis that is in between jeans and business casual.

If my choices are black pants and a blouse or jeans and a sweater, what would you recommend if I will be sitting down with counselors and visiting a class? Does it really matter as long as you look nice/put-together/like you could be an actual law student?

I don't know about visit etiquette. But if you want something in between "nice" black pants and jeans, I think khakis are fine for girls too. I wore them frequently to work (large company, office environment) w/polo shirts and other women did too. This was considered business casual there.

Disclaimer: I have zero fashion sense.

Of course there are khakis for women.

Something of this sort:

with (exact same as guys) a button down, polo, sweater or even easier--black turtleneck...nice shoes, done.

+1

Also, a lot of dresses and skirts fall into the not-too-fancy, not-too-casual range. This is mostly what I wear to work, where we do business casual-ish.

I would think that dress pants (not khakis or jeans) and a blouse or sweater would be fine. I would follow the standard job interview guidelines as far as hair, makeup, and jewelry. Short hair should be neatly styled; long hair should be at least partially pulled back. Minimal makeup and modest jewelry. Oh, and no open-toed shoes. Or tacky fake nails.

Yeah, at my firm, we have a business casual dress code and khakis run rampent. Chinos like the one above are a little more casual, but dressed up they are absolutely fine. I would wear pointy toed flats to look like you tried more, but not a lot and a tucked in button down.

This would probably be fine, but dress pants are not necessary for a visit and might give off the wrong impression unless you dress them down. I would still go with khakis, not jeans.

Thanks for your advice. I unfortunately do not own khakis because they are too casual for my job. Even if it is cold, would a dress/nice seater dress and tights or leggings be ok?

I would definitely stay away from leggings or a sweater dress. if you're really between a rock and a hard place, wear a work shift with a more casual cardigan, tights and a pair of flats.

I would recommend just picking up a nice pair of khakis for future law school events.

I know what you mean, khakis aren't really my thing either. I think a sweater dress is perfect (that's what I wore when I visited Michigan).

What if you're from Texas and spent two years in the corporate world?

Then I think the ass-less chaps would be a nice touch.

I think any relatively nice pant will do. I wore a pair of slim-fit corduroys, a button up, a blazer, and flats to a visit and felt perfectly comfortable, maybe even a tiny bit dressed up. As long as you're well put together somewhere in the sprectrum of business casual I don't think it really matters what piece combination you end up with. Hope that helps :)

If you've already been accepted and you aren't going for an interview, it really doesn't matter what you wear. Just don't dress like you're going the gym. If the worry is what your future classmates will think of you, well, you're a tool, but that doesn't matter either because no one will really remember.
