Thanks! If the numbers work. I'd like to stay in California, but I have to balance my preference against my aversion to debt. It would be great to live and work in San Francisco/the bay area.

He left me a voice message Wednesday last week, but we weren't able to touch base until today.

Got the call from dean Canada two days ago. Today I emailed him to say I would be going to Davis, who offered me a very big grants package. Plus I really like the very small class sizes and profs. here.

Anyway, I hope one of you guys gets a phone call in the coming days! :)

How large are the classes at Hastings? When I visited Davis the classes did not strike me as small.

If I remember correctly, Hastings class is around 400 with the sections each being around 80+-. Davis is around 200 students with each section being about 30.

I just withdrew from Hastings yesterday. Davis was the school I really wanted to go to, and they offered me money... Can't beat that.

Yes, this is true, except that some sections are 30, some are about double that size I think.

Taking a look at Hastings attendees on LSN, I noticed that their stats are high up there, surpassing both 75% marks. Anxiety struck me once again today when I realized Hastings will be full of people who wanted to go stay in the Bay Area and go to Boalt but couldn't because their stats just weren't incredible enough.

Davis has 200-220 students and 3 sections. (The smaller, 30-student classes are for legal research/writing). You can now pull up the fall/spring sked online and see color-coded 1L section schedules. There are 3 colors.

Hastings is supposed to be like 400-425 and 4-5 sections, I think. (The last batch of 1Ls, though, were in a 475-student class.)

So the section-size difference is probably something like 75 vs. 100.

I'm confused. It was my understanding that ALL of our classes at Davis except legal writing would be COMBINED sections. And the one I attended had at least 80 people in it. I'm not trying to nitpick your decision as I was accepted at Davis as well. Just curious where the reasoning is on this one point.

Eek, the entering class was 475 last year? That's impressively large.

Your class section is 30 people, and for legal writing/something else I don't remember it will only be those 30 people. The other classes are about 60-90 people which is comprised of 2-3 sections. But you still take every class with the same 29 other people (some classes are just diluted with one or two additional sections).

When I went admitted students day at Hastings, they said they were trying to bring their class size down to about 390 this year... Still one of the biggest law school classes in the US.

well, still waiting on the call here but
thanks to those who have made the call
and gotten back to Mr. Canada quickly.

Hopefully the list wasn't too long,
I'd love to get some good news tomorrow
going into the weekend!

Congrats on your decisions on Davis,
both Hastings and Davis are great schools
so while the decision may have been difficult
you couldn't really go wrong either way

Re: section sizes, I see your point. Although to the extent that section sizes are in fact small at King Hall, that is just support of my larger point: I was drawn to the overall matriculating class size/tighter campus, etc...
Besides, big class size is not a negative thing on some objective basis; I don't hear those at GULC complaining too much about the size of their class. But to me, subjectively, class size was important, that's all.

I've just been trying to sort that out over the past few days. Saw a few places, some were OK, some were "no chance I'm living there," and now finally it looks like I found a place. There are def. still lots of rooms available in shared housing on craigslist. That's the best way to do it. You could get a studio, yes, but even a 2BR or 3BR with fellow law students of grad students = $500 - $600 a month rent. You can find secluded quiet, suburbanesque house or an apt. complex with pool, etc. (taking a gamble with the latter whether all your neighbors are chill or whether they will play beer pong 24/7) :)
If you want a quieter area, South Davis and East Davis are good places to start. But there are good options scattered everywhere, and everything's within 3 miles or so of campus.

I'm moving that way in about 2.5 weeks. In a bit of logistical serendipity, fiance and I will be temporarily staying with her family in Sac suburbs until early August. Doing that in part to see how the Hastings WL turns out. But assuming I stick with Davis, she and I will probably get a place in midtown Sacramento.

As to the class-size thing, tommy's points are pretty much exactly mine. Though I am starting to swing back around now to not caring if I went to Hastings with 375-425 other 1Ls. If Canada calls me before, say, I sign a lease or fiance gets a job, things will get pretty hairy.

I just withdrew... tough decision, but it just didn't add up financially for me. Good luck to those still waiting.

Where do you find the schedules online? The admitted students site? I can't seem to locate them.

Thanks!

Will we see any WL movement today? I'm predicting no.

J Burrito: Davis' schedule for the fall/spring is here.
