These are the books I plan on reading:

Bear and the Dragon by Tom Clancy
Shogun by James Clavel
The Entire Harry Potter Series (wife has been bugging me to to read them)
The Law of Nines by Terry Goodkind
and
The Gunslinger by Stephen King

I figure I won't have a chance to read these once law school starts so I better read them now while I do have time. There will be plenty of time to study come September.

I am also just finishing up with Crime and Punishment so I vote yes.

My junior/senior year of HS Brit Lit/AP English teacher said, and I quote about this book, "The first chapter is the crime, and the rest is the punishment."

Just sayin'.

I was not a fan.

i was always so mad they made us read the classics in high school. it ruined them for so many people. luckily not me. i can't bear to read anything written after 1900

Beowulf was good, Fountainhead was good. I liked the portions of The Canterbury Tales we read. But there was something about the women and the Russians that I never liked.

Got a subscription to the New York times a month ago. Best decision ever. I live in San Antonio Texas, and the writing is sooooooo noticeably better (duh...). Easy way to pass the time. Really cheap also!

At my Ugrad they had a "collegiate readership program" that provided a free copy of the USA Today and/or The NY Times for free with the swipe of your school ID. I must have saved thousands of dollars by grabbing a free copy of the Times every morning.

As for me, i'm into Slaughterhouse Five and "Let The Great World Spin." Finished The Crying of Lot 49, 1984, and Animal Farm recently.

I'm a fan of the classics, what can I say.

i love jane austen... her books are like soap operas, only they make you feel smart instead of dumb

Since things like Freakonomics got recommended, I'll recommend something by Malcolm Gladwell like Outliers or Blink. Those kind of books can be a bit eye-opening.

Since things like Freakonomics got recommended, I'll recommend something by Malcolm Gladwell like Outliers or Blink. Those kind of books can be a bit eye-opening.

I visited an MBA class at Stanford, and Blink was on the reading list and made a case study. I have only read The Tipping Point, and like it a lot. My boyfriend has cruised through everything Gladwell wrote and loves them all. Outlier even prompts him to volunteer as a teacher at KIPP.

I found Atlas Shrugged to be pretty interesting, particularly if you relate it to today's economic realities. Though I politically fall as a libertarian, and believe in the free-market.

The only think that sucked about Atlas Shrugged, is she spent about 950 pages showing you what she thought, then she spent 75 pages literally TELLING you what she thought, and then another 25-50 pages wrapping it up.

edit: I should say I found Atlas Shrugged *more* interesting. It was my bathroom book for the better part of 6 months though. 10 minutes a day, man.

Peter Irons history of the Supreme Court. It's a slightly liberal biased story-telling kind of account, but if you don't have one it gives you a pretty decent foundational understanding of constitutional law and the evolution of American jurisprudence, and it is a fun read.

This. If anyone is at all interested in someday working in a legal or legislative capacity on the Hill, or in politics at all, really, read Caro's LBJ trilogy. Yes: LBJ. Utterly fascinating. You have time before August.

Nope. Not reading Ayn Rand is definitely TCR.

If you want to read philosophy you could do much, much better. The books are poorly written and Objectivism might be interesting if you're a 17 year old white guy from the suburbs.

I take offense at that. I outgrew objectivism by the time I was a 17 year old white kid form the suburbs.
