I talked to the office today -- They are very nice but as one might imagine could not really provide to much information. Not so sure what my next step is at this point, but I do like Marquette maybe ill stick with it.

While somewhat important, If you wanted to go to Marquette before I dont think a drop in the rankings should change your mind. They change yearly, they could very well be back in top 100 by time you graduate.

Although I withdrew from marquette, I do want to emphasize that if you were fine with attending Marquette before the rankings, you will be fine attending it after. Marquette is still a powerhouse in Milwaukee and places well around WI. It never placed that well outside of the state to begin with so if you are ok with working in Milwaukee the rankings should not affect your decision. If you are not ok with working in Milwaukee you shouldn't be attending Marquette to begin with.

Agreed. I'm attending MarqueTTTe (sorry, couldn't resist :D) in the fall and while I'm certainly not happy about the rankings, the truth is if you're going to Marquette, you're probably either going there because you like its specialties (sports law and dispute resolution) or because you want to practice in Milwaukee. In my case, it's the former, and just because it dropped in the rankings doesn't mean all the sports law connections the school has are suddenly going to dry up. Nor does it mean that all those Hawaii and Syracuse grads who are now in T2 are gonna come sweeping into Milwaukee and take your jobs.

Also, I wouldn't be surprised if Marquette tried to up their selectivity. Opening up that beautiful new building this year with a thirteen spot rankings drop probably doesn't make the administrators there any happier than it does you, so I'd expect them to try and make a bid for T2 status again next year. I wouldn't be surprised to see them back where they were next year.

Marquette was never high on the Top 100 list to begin with. A drop in rankings is not going to make employers that were previously interested in Marquette graduates all of a sudden shy away from them. Employers know that rankings are based on a system of sometimes arbitrary differences (for example, rankings typically take into account average starting salary, which of course will be higher in far west and east coast areas since the cost of living there is also higher; however, the rankings probably do not consider "cost of living" as a variable). With the way employers have begun to cut salaries in response to economic difficulties, I wouldn't be surprised if that alone was sufficient to cause the drop.

The bottom line is that no one really knows how the rankings are calculated, or what is taken into account. Marquette still has all the same benefits it had last week. A ranking number is not going to instantly change that, and employers know that.

Anyone else who has already posted saying something along the lines of "you shouldn't change your mind about attending Marquette just because of the new rankings if you wanted to attend there before" is absolutely correct.

In fact, I wouldn't be surprised to see Marquette back in the Top 100 by the time any current applicant reaches graduation.

I apologize for the double-post, but I felt others in the community might be interested in this... below is a portion of a mass-email sent by Dean Kearney of the Marquette University Law School regarding the rankings change for MULS in 2011:
Dean Joseph D. Kearney wrote:I have been asked whether I will comment on the U.S. News & World Report rankings, whose latest iteration contains a change in the rankings that, though minor, places Marquette in the third tier, where schools are not individually ranked. While I rarely comment on the rankings when they contain good news (as has been the case for the past several years), I do not wish, through any silence, to be mistaken as being uninterested in any phenomenon that might materially affect the reputation of the Law School. So I will say a thing or two, although my comments in this relatively public forum will be rather succinct.

The primary thing that I wish to mention is not that the U.S. News rankings do not capture important aspects of educational policy, although this is true. It rather is that, despite this year’s downturn in the U.S News ranking, the trajectory of the Law School, viewed over any reasonable period (and certainly over the past 12 months), is unquestionably in the right direction. In this regard, falling out of the second tier is, relative to most of our history, a good problem to have: it was not until almost the middle of this past decade (viz., in the 2004 rankings) that Marquette Law School ever was as high as the second tier. And there we have continued to be, just above the third tier, for most of the subsequent time, with the occasional downturn (viz., the 2007 rankings and now the 2011 rankings). Contrast this with the decade and a half that preceded—where the only exception to our being in the third tier was that, for several years in the mid-1990s, we were in the fourth of five tiers—and you will begin to see the upward reputational trajectory to which I have referred.

There is so much else that might be said concerning these matters: e.g., that, for the first time ever, the Law School has three separate programs ranked in the top 25 of law schools (dispute resolution, legal writing, and part-time education) and that our ranking in what I would expect to be the most important individual category from your perspective—that among lawyers and judges—in fact improved materially in the latest rankings. Rather than exploring these matters further here, I will conclude by saying that you may be sure that we will examine the matter in some detail and will continue to invest in initiatives that improve the substance of our program. These investments do pay off for you: the legal community has long recognized the quality of our graduates (consider in this regard the remarkable example of the diploma privilege, which the Law School recently helped successfully to defend).

This brings me to the third matter, a stunning example of the Law School’s progress (and the once-in-a-lifetime matter to which I alluded above): the opening of Eckstein Hall. Eckstein Hall will be the best law school building in the country. That is a bold claim, and one that I therefore do not make lightly, but one whose merits even others outside of the Marquette Law School community (indeed, around the nation) have begun to see, as word has been getting out. I hope that all of you—whether still student or then alumnus—will plan on being present on the afternoon of Wednesday, September 8, when we dedicate Eckstein Hall . . . . (Emphasis in original).

The only ranking that matters for marquette hasn't changed a bit.

It's still the number 2 school in the state. For a regional school, this is all that really matters. And it's not like it has a shitty reputation in state or anything.

I am currently going to be at Marquette in the fall also (although riding out some WLs also) and I grappled with this question --- I decided to live alone. I am a very social person so I expect this to be hard but just didn't want to risk getting myself into a shitty living situation that had any effect on my first year

I will also be a 1L attending Marquette next year and was wondering the same thing about roommates/housing.

Ideally it would be nice to live alone but having a roommate cuts living expenses immensely, you can find some pretty nice 2 bedroom apartments in the downtown area for a good price.

I am a current 2L procrastinating during finals week so I thought I would answer your questions. I currently live with a roommate who is a fellow 2L. We lived together last year as well. We were matched up randomly via student housing and I have to say that it has worked out quite well. I think part of that was due to the fact that we were in different sections our 1L year so we did not stress each other out/see each other every waking moment. We have taken quite a few courses together this year, which has been really good because we talk about the law a lot/study well together for finals. I'm not sure if my experience is unique though. Most of my other law school friends do live a lone and my experience with friends that are girls is that girls in particular do not tend to make good roommates when both are in high stress/work environments. Hope that helps out. I know on campus housing will help match you with law school roommates and 2040 lofts will as well. It definitely has cut down on costs. As for other areas where people live, quite a few people either live near campus (walking distance) or on the east side (near UWM/a short bus ride away). One place near campus that law students live in is the "Catholic Knights building." It's an apartment complex where they allow only grad students to live but it is kinda expensive. The apartments on the east side tend to be nicer (but more expensive) and I will probably be moving out there for my 3L year since my current roommate is doing a visiting exchange program at another school and I think it is time to live the "grown Up" life.

I am going to start looking for a new place once finals are over (my lease expires May 31,) so I dont think the person who was thinking of starting to look in July will be at too terrible of a disadvantage. There are actually quite a few month to months and other available places so I wouldnt worry. Most of the undergrads have found their next year's housing already by now.

Hope that helps. I'll be around if you have any other questions or feel free to PM.

I know the 2040 Loft roomate matching prossess, but how does one do the campus housing roomate matching?

Also, do law students really live at 2040 or are those just the castaways?

Also, with the campus matching program...did that mean you had to live in a campus/ university owned apt? I know i want to live within walking distance...possibly at library hill, but need to find a roomie to do that

There are a couple different groups that I know of that live at 2040.

When I discussed the campus matching program, I did mean the campus/university owned apartment. I live in Humphrey Hall which is 17th and Wisconsin.

I know a few groups of students who live at Library Hill and I think they also have a similar to 2040 Lofts Law School matching program/

I've been looking at Library Hill, 2040 Lofts, Majestic Lofts, and Boston Lofts.

Definitely are not affordable without a roommate however.

Can anyone tell me when orientation is?

There has been little to no movement on the waitlist. I'm thinking they are just going to see who doesn't show for orientation and start making calls at that point, hopefully at least.
