Re: Rutgers Newark
For those who are one L's i have a rather interesting question. Which would be worth more to a law student, a summer internship/job or taking summer session classes to get ahead.

Re: Rutgers Newark
It;s open to anyone. To my knowledge, they don't (and legally can't) deny you access to MSP. Just use a story to show how you were disadvantaged.TUhustler wrote:Can anyone join MSP? Maybe I am ignorant but I didn't think it was open to everyone.KosovasLostSon wrote:In regards to MSP, that may be true for his employer, but I doubt it matters in general. MSP opens clerships and summer positions (e.g. MidLaw, In-House Counsel, DA's Office, etc.) normally reserved for students in the top 15% of the class and/or for 2L/3Ls. These kids have paid jobs their 1st year summers (granted not much in some cases), and are able to make connections not normally made. Once you're in the door, it's up to you to prove what you're worth. MSP makes it easier to get into some doors. Granted, MSP students are somewhat coddled with meeting 2 weeks prior to law school to form bonds/acclimate and weekly facilitations (i.e. essentially school mandated study groups with assignments), but that doesn't take away from the benefits the program offers. I'm not in MSP, and somewhat regret not joining it. If you have the grades, the doors will open regardless. If you're middle of the pack or lower, you're going to have to open those doors. MSP makes it somewhat easier to network and hopefully open those doors.
Just my two cents.

Take the late track... I took the early track and other than starting school an hour earlier, we didn't finish that much earlier than the late track.badpixie wrote:Thanks Rutgers1L! Any other thoughts/suggestions about choosing between the early and late tracks? Pros/cons?Rutgers1L_10 wrote:
Yes I would say this is accurate. I drove everyday. If you get to school by 9-9:30 you will be able to park on the first floor of the deck on Washington st with zero problems. Unless I got there at noon I was always able to find a parking spot in deck 2. On Fridays parking in deck 1 right behind the school is not too bad. The Washington St. Deck is a 2 min walk down the block to the law school and I would rather walk the 2 min that drive around for 10 min looking for a parking spot on deck 6 of the other parking lot. To each his own.

The tuition is project, thus not official. Rutgers determines it tuition in July, and typically rubber stamps the budget, thus what you see there should be accurate. Last year everyone knew the tuition rate, as they were capped to 3 percent per the stimulus bill.

For one L's, i have another question. I do not like purchasing my books at the bookstore. Does the law school make available a list of books needed for online purchase?

Re: Rutgers Newark
The administration sends out a spreadsheet for the first semester with classes and books so you can get them at Amazon or whatever. In subsequent semesters it takes more work, but you can still avoid the bookstore. I don't remember when the spreadsheet comes out exactly, but it was in plenty of time to use regular shipping... like late July, early August.NJcollegestudent wrote:For one L's, i have another question. Excellent news, as paying sticker price on the bookstore cost is never a good idea. What is the average cost for the first year books; meaning how much did you pay? I typically for an undergraduate semester spend 200-250 dollars on books and then get back about 80-90% of what i paid my selling online.

Re: Rutgers Newark
I bought all of my books online either through amazon or Barnes N Noble. Sometime around July-Sep B&N has a "back to school" sale where you get 10% off all textbooks and free shipping. The R-U bookstore is technically a barnes&Noble, but the online shop just seems to be a better deal. As soon as you get your fall semester book list get your books ASAP. This isn't like undergrad where you can wait and see if the prof will really require you to use the book or see if you can use and old edition of a book. You need the book and you need the one the professor REQUIRES. Some profs may recommend a book, and in that case it's just that a recommendation. But order all required text ASAP because you dont want to be the one having to make photocopies of your reading the first few weeks of school because your book is out of stock or backordered.NJcollegestudent wrote:Excellent news, as paying sticker price on the bookstore cost is never a good idea. I bought new books and they were ~$90.00-120.00 each. All of the required supplements were about $20 each, there were only a couple of them. The bluebook is ~$20 and the other LRW books are relatively cheap. 99% of all rising 2Ls will be selling their LRW books so if you just wait for a few emails or check the law school you'll probably catch a good deal on those books.
If for some reason you can't get a book and school is about to start you can 1)wait it out for the book to arrive 2)go to the campus bookstore and pay their price. It just depends on how badly you want the book
As far as internship/summer school
-Unless you are really trying to graduate early because you already have some employment lined up and you prefer not to spend an extra semester in school I would not recommend forgoing your first year to take classes. The first summer will be the first opportunity you have to 1)practice law 2)learn the daily life of a lawyer 3)figure out what kind of practice areas you like/dislike 4)build your resume 5)Try out an area of law before committing to something
-You will have plenty of opportunity to take classes and earn credits. You should have no problem getting the required number of credits to graduate and getting all of the mandatory and recommended classes done in your 3 years
-You may be further behind your peers if you choose to remain in school all summer and don't take the opportunity to do "real" legal writing and research
-After your first year you may not have another opportunity to decide what kind of work you will be doing after graduation. But, after your first year you will have 2 more years of school
-And unless your job is going to pay for you to attend class in the summer it may be a waste of money. If the money is not a factor then taking a class just for personal edification may not be a bad idea if you're combining it with full/pt legal work

Re: Rutgers Newark
just a quick blurb for those worried about the area: don't be.
I wound up at Arena Lounge (a bar on the corner of Mulberry and Green) and a friend and I decided to head over to Washington street.
We parked, and walked around at 4 a.m. No one cared. Yes there were black people and other minorities around, no they didn't want to kill us.
The building is super nice and we had no problems whatsoever. As a NJ resident, I am well aware that Newark has its "Stay the Fuck Away From Here/Not Even the Police Patrol Here" areas, but downtown and the campus are not that area, in fact, it is quite nice.

Re: Rutgers Newark
Rutgers-Newark as mentioned above is quite safe. For anyone who is worried, Ive been here nearly 2 plus years and i can attest that it is a great place to go to school. Sure, you do hear ambulances and police cars from time to time, however, in my own town we hear more than i do in Newark. Also the Buildings are within a few hundred feet of one another, and there are emergency phones everywhere. If you feel as if you need to go to a certain place, there are shuttles and late night police escorts to the light rail and halls. Lastly, the law building has limited availability to non rutgers student, staff and faculty. Students, and faculty have swipe privileges late night so you can be assured only your fellow classmates are there.
For the Rutgers 1L, thank you for taking the time to answer my question. I always wondered what law students did in the summer. Now my goal is to get into law school and do well.

Re: Rutgers Newark
I'm leaning toward the early track, even though I'm not a morning person. I'll be commuting, and I'd prefer to park in the deck that's behind the law school, which fills up by 9am. I'd also like to have the option to get back on the road before evening rush hour on some days, because the Parkway can be a beast.romi46 wrote:I chose late. The parkway is a nightmare during the winter. I live in Central NJ and i can tell you when its snowing, raining or cloudy the parkway is full of cars.

Does anyone walk from Newark-Penn to school everyday? Trying to get a handle on whether or not this is feasible or if most people get on the Light Rail. I'll probably be coming in from Hoboken/Jersey City.

Re: Rutgers Newark
You can walk from penn station to the law school-it's not far and only takes 10 minutes. Sometimes in the winter though it may be too cold.get it to x wrote:Does anyone walk from Newark-Penn to school everyday?
