Yes, the lockers are on the ground floor of Jerome Greene Hall. I was told that all 1L students get lockers (assigned in August, I think), but that they weren't guaranteed for 2Ls or 3Ls. Is this true? If so, does anyone know how 2Ls and 3Ls could go about getting them? (A very important issue for a commuter.)

it's pretty crappy, i went there twice to check it out, it is completely underground and feels really cramped and crowded. i saw students jogging around an indoor "track" that was about as wide as a hallway with a ceiling 3 feet above their heads. the pool isnt worth mentioning.

i'll just keep paying $79 a month for my NYSC membership... it's pricey for a student but if you are like me and go every day then I think it's worth it

As a CU grad student, I can respond to this one, too. Dodge gym is located underground, in the northern part of campus (near Uris Hall, where the business school is). It will certainly do in a pinch. The gym gets ridiculously crowded in the early evenings, so you'll almost definitely have to wait for cardio equipment (there's a sign-up sheet and a 30 minute limit on the machines). The free-weight room is incredibly disorganized and pretty small. Everything you need is there, and it's totally fine when no one is around (as long as you don't mind looking all over the place for a matching set of dumbbells or another 10lb. plate). The locker room is actually decent.

Honestly, I don't know if I'll use it next year, or continue to go to my NYSC in Brooklyn. Dodge is obviously a lot cheaper, but the prospect of having to shower in front of my former students (since I now live far away from campus and refuse to be drenched in sweat during an 80-minute subway ride) may be the deal clincher for me. But if I lived near campus, I would definitely go there, and make it a point to do so during non-peak hours.

Are there relatively affordable gyms in the MH area? I looked at the gym during ASW and was not favorably impressed, especially since my UG has a really nice gym complex. Taking the 30-minute machine limit and difficulty of getting a cardio machine into account, I would rather not use the gym on campus. :)

^ NYSC has several branches in Harlem and one at 94th and Broadway: http://www.joinmysportsclubs.com/Select.aspx. I've only been to the one on Broadway, and, honestly, it's not that much better than Columbia!

im just glad to hear im not the only one who will be commuting to campus next year. :D

brooklyn is rough though, i currently work in the financial district and on the three occasions ive had to take the 123 to MH it has been quite a pain.

i'll be living in the 70s/80s next year, so hopefully the NYSCs there are decent... it's a hit-or-miss sometimes. for $86 a month i can use any NYSC any time, so I've been to quite a few, and some are significantly better/worse than others.

i guess if you are living near Columbia and can spare ~$70 a month you might be able to find a good local gym. it doesnt make sense to join NYSC since the closest one is on 94th st and, as Series70 mentioned, it's not too great.

yeah, I think I would prefer something a little farther north since I requested to live in the 115th law school apartments. ~$70 a month honestly isn't that bad, and I think paying for a gym membership rather than getting it free through my school or building would motivate me to go more oftern.

Has anyone else who submitted finaid documents on the deadline not heard back yet? I hope my stuff didn't get lost...

AND

Does anyone know the earliest date we can move into UAH housing? I'm going to be in NYC for the summer, and it'd be nice to not have to deal with a subletting situation.

According to this site, it costs $71K to attend Columbia for the 2009-2010 school year. Does anyone have the numbers for 2010-2011 year? How much did it increase? Thanks!

I think most of us who didn't request a quick decision are still waiting on financial aid... which sucks.

$74k

it can really cost quite a lot less. If you're living in a 1k per month share I can't see why you can't keep your room and board spending under 20k for the year. I know the good life is expensive in ny, and I plan on spending well over 30k in room and board and living expenses; however, its not like 74k is the actual cost of attending CLS, its just what students tend to spend. Most other grad students at columbia live on about 22k or less per year so no idea why CLS needs to cost over like 65k.

The $74k is what Columbia has stated for '10-'11.

Tuition + Fees + Books alone are $53,705. So outside of that $20k per year on EVERYTHING else puts you right at their estimated Cost of Attendance. (Their room and board estimate is $16,500 btw)

What exactly does the cost of 'board' pay for? When I was in undergrad the cost of board was mostly made up of my meal plan, but I don't plan to eat in the dining halls at all in LS, so I don't really want to pay for a meal plan.

Food/drink estimate in general.

The two things that I believe will put me close to the actual $74K is the fact that 1) I plan on living in my apartment every summer (this adds 3 months to Columbia's expected costs) and 2) I plan on getting school insurance.

I guess it's still worth contacting them and mentioning the 45k from Chicago, though, right? Just to see if they budge at all? (I have another question for financial aid anyway, so I might as well mention the offer in the same email.)

I think they'd bump it up to $30-35k, maybe a little more, if you show them the $45k at Chicago.

Just got the final email today (I wrote yesterday telling them I had a competing offer from NYU and had to make a decision by 4/19). They didn't budge. Oh well. Honestly, I'm happy they gave me any money in the first place.
