Does anyone know how many Hamiltons and Butlers they offer per year?

Re: IN AT COLUMBIA LAW SCHOOL!!!!!!
Thanks! I dunno, it's a tough choice. Honestly, before today, I would've said no. But things feel different after you open that letter and see them talk about how much money they're willing to give you. My best friend is going to end up at either Columbia or NYU (he's been accepted to NYU already) and it might be kind of fun to be in the same area as him.SolarWind wrote:Congrats TomHobbes! Hopefully I'll just get accepted to Yale and be able to dodge this decision. Time to apply.

I felt the same way after opening the letter on Monday. For the rest of that day, I seriously thought about the offer. Then I woke up on Tuesday and thought "no way." It'll be interesting to see how your thought process unfolds.tomhobbes wrote:

Re: IN AT COLUMBIA LAW SCHOOL!!!!!!
I got over the thrill of a top-5 law school thinking that I was worth $150,000 and remembered that I should go to the program that best suits my long-term professional and personal goals. Financial aid isn't a crucial issue for me; I'd far rather set myself up properly for the type of life that I want to lead.of Benito Cereno wrote:What changed Tuesday? Big fancy binder in the mail today. It's a lot prettier than the acceptance letter folder.

+180. I already read the entire Admitted Student Handbook. I'm in the middle of preparing the first draft of my outline and soliciting interest in a study group...Kretzy wrote:We get a binder too? Re: IN AT COLUMBIA LAW SCHOOL!!!!!!
does anyone know if is it possible to get a butler (or hamilton, i guess, but seems much less likely) later on in the cycle if enough people turn them down?

+1, although I seriously doubt it. It wouldn't seem to be a good bargaining decision in most circumstances. In the crudest terms, Hamiltons and Butlers are enticements for students that can do better than CLS at sticker. If they didn't see you (or me) that way before, why would they now? The exception of course would be that almost all of their Hamiltons turn them down for HYS AND you're among the best remaining admits AND they're not feeling a financial pinch.somewhatwayward wrote:does anyone know if is it possible to get a butler (or hamilton, i guess, but seems much less likely) later on in the cycle if enough people turn them down?

when can we expect to hear about any non hamilton/butler money? how generous is CLS w/ other merit money- and do splitters ever have a shot?

Re: IN AT COLUMBIA LAW SCHOOL!!!!!!
If anyone's interested, I did a pretty quick analysis of LSN to see how many Hamiltons and Butlers went out every year.
2010 cycle: 14 Hamiltons 8 Butlers
2009 cycle: 14 Hamiltons 17 Butlers
2008 cycle: 12 Hamiltons 17 Butlers
2007 cycle: 24 Hamiltons 4 Butlers
2006 cycle: 11 Hamiltons 8 Butlers
Based on this, you could tentatively conclude that there's not many more Hamiltons going out, but there are a bunch of Butlers still waiting. It seems like they deliberately cut Butlers in favor of more Hamiltons during the 06-07 cycle, then decided to go back to the old way of doing things.
Based on this information, and random anecdotes from other threads, my guess is that 50-70 Hamiltons are awarded every year, and that Butlers are only slightly more common.

Re: IN AT COLUMBIA LAW SCHOOL!!!!!!
just got a second big envelope from columbia in the mail: no yellowey brown this time.
It's a nice "Admitted Students Handbook," three-ring binder style, which is giving me high school flashbacks.
The letter with it says that the handbook is available online on the website, so it's probably not any new information- but it when does it not feel great to get big envelopes in your mailbox?!
(admitted in the first wave of RD acceptances, live in nyc.)
