Is any one living off campus? I thought that only about one third of people lived in HLS accommodation but now I'm getting worried because everyone seems to be going through the lottery. I've just signed the lease on a place in Somerville.

If anyone bumps me, be sure to leave your name visible so I can "thank" you later.

Quote from the site I saw after I selected a room: You will receive notification if your room is selected by someone with a lower lottery number and you will be able to re-enter the lottery to select another room until midnight.
Does that mean we could potentially get bumped after 8pm? Did this happen to anyone?

I am also living off campus (most likely!). I have viewings for a few places set up for next weekend, and should have a place for the fall by then!creatinganalt wrote:Is any one living off campus? I'm looking for August 1. The realtor seemed to think that was doable, and I'd like to arrive in Cambridge a few weeks early to get settled.adameus wrote:what is your planned move in day? I'll probably be off-campus as well; I'm a late admit and I think I missed the boat on HRES. Plus, I'm willing to be a bit further away from campus for the cost benefit.

Anyone know if Terry Terrace apartments are within the proximity of construction noise from the new HLS building being developed? Looks like a great place to live, but I'd hate to be hearing construction noise all day...

Hey,
newly minted 2L, I never really noticed the noise this past year.
Terry Terrace is legit... pretty good deal considering all utilities+ free internet.
btw, to everyone who got in, congrats but do yourself a favor-- borrow extra money and don't live in gropius. North Hall and Hastings are worth the extra money, but getting an off campus place nearby on Mass Ave or 10 min east in Somerville is easily better

Re: In at Harvard!
Should I just give up on on-campus housing at this point? I would pay the highest rate if need be...I just really want to be on-campus. But I haven't even received my admissions binder yet, let alone a lottery number. Is my hope bordering on naivete this late in the game ?

Re: In at Harvard!
I would think they would be...I took a look at them at ASW and they're literally across the street from the new building. But then again you never know...I currently live NEXT DOOR to major subway construction in NYC and I can barely hear any noise from the outside even during peak work hours.sayan wrote:Anyone know if Terry Terrace apartments are within the proximity of construction noise from the new HLS building being developed? random question about financial aid for those who have received it already...a friend was telling me $4500 of subsidized stafford loans were virtually guaranteed per semester to students, is this true???

Re: In at Harvard!
So I just called HRES and found out that ALL their leases are at least 12 months (i.e. you have to pay for the summer even if you’re not planning on staying)…so what exactly is the point of leasing through HRES (besides the benefit of having a reliable landlord)? Are they less expensive than other places (I’m not familiar with the rental prices around Cambridge)?
I’m just trying to understand what benefits, if any, you get by renting through HRES….and my housing selection window is on Monday so any help would be much appreciated!

Re: In at Harvard!
Open question: do you any of you think that I'd be absolutely boning myself by waiting for on-campus housing off of the waitlist? My lottery number was within 20 places of 220 and I called to ask about my chances (apparently, they're "good").
It's just that I'm not leaving the West coast until about a week before orientation starts and I'm not relishing trying to find an apartment/room while I'm across the country.
