You need to move to LA now. You can get a short sublet in LA until late July or early August. You can always move to SD at a moment's notice if you have to. Chances are you'll get an offer from SW very late in the game. If you are already settled in SD, you won't be able to accept.

Unfortunately I only have enough money for August's rent/ security deposit. I had to move home to Michigan from D.C. since my lease ran out/ my roommate moved also. I tried to transfer to the Barnes & Noble by my house but they didn't want to hire me just for a couple of months. I don't have a car either so moving from LA to SD would be hard. I emphasized in my LOCI that I'm moving to Socal regardless, but LA is where I really want to be due to friends/ relatives (potentially) being in the area. My sister and her husband want to move to LA but don't have the money to yet, but if we lived together and split costs they could move out also. We'll see, but I'm sure there's a lot of people who have good reasons for wanting to be in LA.

Sounds like you are making excuses. You don't need a car to move from LA to SD. Ever heard of U-Haul?

Lol, how would I pay for a uhaul though? I have $1200, that's not going to cut it for two months rent, security deposit, living expenses, transportation costs, etc.

edit: I understand what you're saying though, it would certainly help getting there. If I could I would, I've tried getting a different job too but that hasn't gone anywhere, metro Detroit's economy is, well, very bad. We'll see, maybe something will come up.

Found this in a Loyola thread, but it applies equally to Southwestern
ckwright wrote:For anyone wondering about housing this thread from the class of 2011 is pretty useful.

North/East
Pasadena: Pasadena is a very safe and nice area that's a quick drive or a quick metro ride to Loyola (Loyola has a free shuttle from the 7th street metro so you don't have to walk at all). Pasadena is expensive but you can find some good deals if you shop around.
Glendale: Glendale is a pretty quick drive to Loyola, it's cheap and it's pretty nice. It's not the most exciting place in the world but it does have some fun places and is a quick drive to other good places.
Eagle Rock: Most people don't know where eagle rock is, but it's a cool little neighborhood right between Glendale/Pasadena, it's cheap, it's sort of quirky and indie and it's a pretty nice little area.
Studio City Much the same as Glendale in terms of pros and cons.

West:
Santa Monica: Santa Monica is an awesome place to live with lots of young people and cool things to do. It's expensive but you can find some cheap places. It's where the main LMU campus is, but it's a really far drive to Loyola. It's only like 12 miles or so, but you have to fight traffic on the 10 the entire way.
Westwood/Etc Westwood is where UCLA is, the area is expensive, it borders Beverly Hills, there's fun things to do but you have to fight the 10 on traffic again and it's a costly place to live.

The Woods:
Hollywood: Hollywood is an interesting place to live. You can find some cheap places to live but parts of Hollwood are kind of seedy, they're safe but they are sort of sketchy. There's all kinds of fun to be had in Hollywood but as a 1L I don't think it's worth it to live there.
West Hollywood: WoHo is kind of Hollywood but much cleaner and more LGBT friendly (of course so is Hollywood). A lot young professionals live here but it can be a bit expensive. It's a pretty quick drive to Loyola from here and about the same from Hollywood.
Silverlake: Silverlake is a trendy little hipster enclave by Hollywood. Rent can be expensive (like everywhere in LA) but deals can be found. It's a cool place to live that's a really quick drive to Loyola. I would say that this is a better option that Hollywood itself because it's nicer and it's got a better balance of things, but you pay for that balance.

The Rest:
Downtown: Downtown has gone through a revitalization over the last few years. Prices are expensive and while there are interesting things to do it's still not always the best area to be able to walk around in. There are some quite nice places to live though and it's just about as close as you can get to campus. The one good thing with the economy being crap is that downtown was overbuilt so there are some cheap rents in nice buildings to be found.
The San Fernado Valley: "The Valley" Eh you don't want to live here, it's cheap and safe but it's also boring, suburban, and a really far drive away.
Burbank: Thank half way between the Valley and Glendale in terms of location and pros/cons.
South: You don't really want to live anywhere to the south, the areas are bad, the drive is bad, plus you'd be close to USC and nobody wants that.

I might make two deposits: one for an Orange County studio and another for a studio in LA. I live in South La right now and it sucks. I'm near "The CPT" (Compton).

Finally, I receive a 2nd call from SW and they accept me! Yay SW, here I come!!

For southwestern, ....... I get a call guaging my interest in the school. I say I want to go there, and they say I'm in........
LSAT: 153
LSDAS GPA: 3.61
-----------------------

I found an earlier thread about chapman/sw waitlist: http://www.top-law-schools.com/forums/v ... 3&start=25 it seems like people were getting accepted off the wait list throughout July. Now im beginning to believe its actually not late in the game but instead...the games about to begin!

Full time program classes start Aug 23. That's 58 days from now! lol wow I sound desperate.... the only reason I am not knee deep in depression is the hope of getting in. A rejection, 2 shitty jobs and ZERO friends (dismissed them all) will be ultra devastating. But I sorta like the feeling I feel like I went "all in" and the dealer is about to throw down the river!

I wonder if its hard to transfer to SW from another T4, looks like they get very few transfers in. I wonder if that's their policy to not take a lot of transfers or lack of interest from students. But then again, I'm not planning on trying to transfer and if I were in a position to do so I would probably try for Loyola on up. Just a thought.

Just got back home to San Francisco from LA doing apartment hunting. Settled on a pretty bomb place in Burbank. Kinda far from school (did the drive in 17 minutes with some traffic). Would have preffered miracle mile, but could not find the right place. My Dad's friend owns the building I will be living so I got super hooked up (2 story loft type place, 1 bdrm, 2 bth, dining, new kitchen for 1000 a month in nice building). Don't know why people say its boring there, its right next to some shopping plaza called the Americana.

I looked at maybe 15 places and they were all either too pricey or too ghetto. Some places look good on craigslist, but are pretty awful in person, like Villa Vicente.

Yes, I am aware that it is in Glendale, but it is very close (around 5 minutes away). Also, I was referring to the statement about Glendale in that little housing analysis (it was called boring).

I used Rent.com, but most of the listings seemed a bit pricey...

Hey Dante, I was wondering with networking being so paramount at a less prestigious school like Southwestern, what you found to be the most rewarding paths either provided by the school or pursued by you independently thus far. The school seems to provide some events for networking but they seem of dubious value.

Obviously, you have to take the initiative to network and find a job. A good number of my classmates didn't really try that hard to land a good summer job. I hustled and got what I wanted. Your success depends on how much you are willing to put into networking and your job search. If you don't make an effort, you will definitely be disappointed.

Guess who got a call from Kelly at Southwestern today?!

Me! lol.

I was on the waitlist I got an offer to attend the traditional day program. My stats were and are: 159 LSAT, and somewhere between a 3.15 and a 3.29 GPA from USC.

If your stats are close to mine, I'm sure they'll be calling you soon with some good news. Keep your chins up people, the wait is almost over!!!! :D

I am not URM, although I am a minority. Listed as Asian (Indian, I guess) but I'm whiter than sour cream. I wrote a pretty strong follow-up with the waitlist reply form, I'm sure that helped.

Thanks for the congrats Salzburg. After posting and then lurking around this thread for the past few weeks, I hope everyone here with the requisite scores gets in, because the anxiety alone has been worthy of reward for all of us. Good luck to everyone, sincerely!

And thanks to Danteshek for his encouraging words about the waitlist.
