For the ladies who attended ASW this past weekend... would it be a mistake to wear a 3 inch heel for the Saturday activities? I'm trying to start thinking about packing...

Honestly, the majority of us wore flats. You could wear them if you want, but I wouldn't recommend it. I don't think I saw anyone wearing heels on Saturday.

Is the ASW really worth it?

After being waitlisted at UVA and WM, W&L with its scholarship offer, courtesy, and opportunities takes first vote for me now.

Just wondering if the ASW tells anything new that an earlier visit might have missed.

I visited last year before submitting my application and just came back Sunday from the ASW. I would recommend going to the ASW. Why, because you'll have the chance to talk to a great deal of current students (1L and 2L). Also, you will be able to spend the night in Lexington which I think helped me get a taste of what living in Lexington is all about. Plus, they're paying for it! Go see as much as possible before making that big decision.

I've only been complete since 3/8, so perhaps it's possible they haven't reviewed my application yet. But is that really the case? I mean, I know I applied a lot later than most people, so wouldn't they have made a decent amount of progress, even if they started in January? Let's say they are doing 100 applications a day for 60 days. That's 6,000 applications. But the school only gets about 3,000 per year, or so that was the case last year. So what if they are only doing 50 a day for 60 days? Play with the numbers however you want, but I think it's clear that they must have a slow process by nature to take this long, especially if they have made decisions on a lot of applications already.

I'd be very surprised if they're reviewing 50 applications a day. It is also clear that they are not reviewing them in order by application date. I went complete (got my status checker email) the day after I got my admissions letter, only 6 days after applying, and my story isn't particularly rare.

Sit tight. It's only been two weeks. Hopefully you'll get some good news before April 15th.

I am pretty sure of the answer here, but just so we're clear, the application status checker will not say in review, just complete, and then change once a decision has been made...right?

Mine still says "Decision reached; notification pending." "Current Status Date: 1/26/10."

New to the thread. ASW was phenomenal! I definitely encourage anyone, especially if you're from a more urban/populous area to go visit. While it's in the middle of nowhere, I definitely felt the resources weren't lacking, at least for externships and job placement. The 3L program sounds like a real selling point when interviewing down the line.

As for living, going to "the bar" apparently means "THE bar" (one of two in town) and going to "the store" means Walmart (or a 40 min drive to Target).

The students, faculty, and townfolk were amazingly friendly and the standard of living...unreal!

That said, wish I wasn't planning to do PT and stay at my job. Went and visited on a lark and really loved the place. Will probably end up withdrawing (got some scholly), for all you WLers there chomping at the bit.

I don't know what the status checker said before I got my acceptance because I honestly didn't expect it so quickly. I went complete on 3/2/10 and got an acceptance email the following monday 3/8/10. My LSAT must have got their attention b/c they were very fast.


Also, I'll be at the ASW on easter weekend. Anyone need a ride from Raleigh on friday?

Well there's also a Tractor Supply Co. about a mile from the school if you're into that kind of shopping. But yeah, even for groceries you only get to choose between Wal-Mart (which I hate) or Kroger.

I am considering withdrawing tomorrow. I have a GI Bill and probably a yellow ribbon scholarship that is good for 4 years and I want to get an MA in philosophy while in law school. I got into Minnesota, UIUC and UCLA. All of which will be fully covered by a combination of school scholarships and military stuff.
OTOH, I would rather live in a rural area than a city, my family is in Philadelphia and I'd like to visit them occasionally and I would rather go to a small school than a large one.
Does anyone have any good reason why I should pick W&L over my other options? I'd be glad to make room for someone else but I am not sure about it yet.

Pretty much everything is within 5 blocks of everything. At least as to the bars and restaurants. The Kroger, Food Lion, liquor store, etc, are a little ways from downtown but nothing is far from anything. I think if you go down Main St. and Jefferson St. in the downtown area you will see both if I recall correctly.

The town is great if you like smaller places. I happen to like smaller places so its a great fit. There are a few good eateries and Charlottesville is close enough is you need something more from time to time. Charlottesville also hosts some big concerts.

The lack of restaurants might not be a bad thing. It'll improve my lack of culinary skills.

The COL is great and I think it offers a much better lifestyle then some of today's overpriced urban or suburban environments.

I looked at GMU. The most basic place costs around 1000. I haven't seen or heard of anything near that in Lexington.

Traffic is easy. I've been in town at the Horse Center during home coming. Thats the only time I saw any backups. Not bad considering VMI, WL, and the horse center all hosted big events on the same weekend.

I think it's on Jefferson between Washington and Nelson. It's Chinese/Japanese combo, though. I'm always wary of those. I want Thai! Guess I'll have to get to cookin'...

I am disturbed by Lex's lack of thai as well, and attempted to make my own thai dish the other day. That was a mistake. lol
