Yup. Need Access, you report your parents income and they give you a Expected Family Contribution basically like the FAFSA, but FAFSA is more for eligibility of loans and NA more for grants

(I believe)

I don't think it would be fair to say this in all cases. Depends on your parents' income, assets, debt, and how many legal dependents they're claiming. Also I don't think their contribution is weighted as heavily as yours (and your spouse's, if eligible). I begrudgingly filled out all the parent info for the schools that required it- I figured it was worth a shot. But I asked all those schools for waivers, and I'd say about half waived the requirement for parent info based on my family situation.

In my case, the FAFSA really screwed me. No parent info required, but nowhere to report outstanding educational loans. Our EFC is really high. :(

How long have you been under evaluation? They may still be translating your file.

this got a little sidetracked...

what i really wanted to know was whether needacess was for determining grants or loans... i want to be able to take out government subsidized and non subsidized loans... my parents will prob help me out some for tuition and rent and whatnot(considering they get to brag to their friends about their son who is in law school-lol)... i do not want need based grants...

so i don't need to fill out needaccess then, right ?

Generally, the NA is only for need-based grants. The FAFSA should cover all federal loans by generating an Estimated Family Contribution, which the school will use to determine your financial need and loan eligibility. Technically the UC Davis website does not specify this; it only indicates that all students applying for financial aid should complete both. I am pretty certain that you do not need to do the NA if you do not want grants, but the best source of information is probably the financial aid office. I would not want to give you incorrect information.

"Phew!" said the UC-Davis admissions office staffer to her colleague. "Got two more done."

"Oh yeah?" her colleague said. "Sure enough you did! A Mr. Pootie and Ms. AimHigh, I see. Well, that's another two out of the way. That's a pretty good day."

"Good day indeed."

"Yup."

"Yup."

[crickets chirp ... tumbleweed blows]

"Well, see you tomorrow!"

"Maybe we'll get another app or two figured out!"

"Whoa-ho, buddy. Who do you think we are? Berkeley?"

...

Congratulations, y'all. The rest of us LimboKids are terribly jealous.

 They spend FOUR minutes with each application before reaching a decision! I guess Wednesdays are 8 minute workdays! Congrats to you two!

I think they're going in reverse order. February's decisions seemed to have been sent in in November.

thanks! Davis is one of my top choices, but I probably prefer Hastings at this point. It's tough to say. Is Davis your top choice?

Got accepted sometime between Saturday/Sunday (I found out Sunday morning when looking at the Status Checker). 174, 2.99 Asian-American who will be graduating with a science degree in May. I applied back in October.

Although Davis isn't my top choice so far it feels nice to finally get accepted at a T1 school. And I'm seriously considering going... just waiting on two other decisions (one is a WL).
