I think building a relationship with Pless is important. It was hard for me too. I really liked Pless a lot. I completely agree. I have a ton of respect for him and, if I were to leave IL for Wash U, telling him would be the hardest part about it!
Can I ask what you like about it? I'd been so set on things before today that Pless is the only one I've forged any kind of meaningful relationship with. I had someone ask me this question via PM one time, so I'll send you (more or less) what I sent him back. These reasons are my own personal reasons, and obviously if you plug in different goals and preferences, you may end up choosing a different school. I love WUSTL for a number of reasons. I guess I'll just run thru my reasons for picking the school, in order from most important factors to less important ones (and I‘m sorry I just wrote a novel):
St. Louis prospects- I love St. Louis and it is undoubtedly my top choice for market. Unlike most of my WUSTL peers, I will be gunning hard to get into that market. While they're all shooting to get to Chicago or back east, I'll be able to network my ass off and build valuable contacts. I think that is just as important, if not more important, than grades or law review. So I turned down arguably better schools (Cornell and Vandy) and a better scholly at Illinois because I felt like Wash U would give me the best shot at the local market.
Reputation/General Prospects- I am from the Midwest, and I can tell you that Wash U has an excellent reputation around here, both among employers and the lay community. I think the job prospects are solid, and I think a student at median should be able to find quality employment, so long as they put in the legwork and networking. Are they going to land market in NYC or LA? Hell no. But I think they’ll be alright. And yes, students at the bottom are going to be up a creek without a paddle, but that seems to be true at anywhere outside of the T6/T10 these days.
Admittedly, if you are biglaw or bust, WUSTL is probably not the best place for you. Dean Spivey has flat out told me that Wash U has traditionally not been a big law powerhouse, even pre-ITE, but he is working hard to change that. While many of their peer schools have seen OCI firms dropping like flies, Wash U has actually brought in dozens of new firms in recent years. Although firms are have been conservative in recent years, I think if and when hiring picks up a bit, the sheer number of firms at WUSTL OCI will help WUSTL students tremendously.
A few examples... Sullivan and Cromwell is interviewing at WUSTL for the first time ever this fall. Last year, the CSO was able to keep K&E from leaving WUSTL's OCI and they should be there again this fall. Traditionally, the CIA has only interviewed at the Top 10 schools, but as of last year, they now recruit at the Top 10 Law schools... plus Wash U. Dean Spivey is relatively new to the school, and he has grown the CSO and been really aggressive in getting firms to come to WUSTL. The school just started a small law/mid law campus interviewing program and it is incredibly vibrant (or maybe it was already there but it got revamped… I can’t remember, but I think Spivey and the CSO just started it). The school also has a great clinic program, including a really solid clinic in D.C. and a partnership with the Brookings Institute. I think they’re really working at pushing into the D.C./East Coast market a bit more.
I know Wash U gets a bad rap sometimes on TLS and XOXO, but that sentiment is very, very rare from the students. I’ve never seen a WUSTL student bash their school on TLS, and I’ve only seen one guy on TLS who was lukewarm about the place. Most WUSTL students on TLS seem like they love the school, they think the CSO is great, and they feel confident about their job prospects. And as far as trolls on other sites go, there is one guy (St. Louis Finance Dood) on XOXO who just rants against the school, and unfortunately he gets a lot of attention and gets cited a lot on TLS. But every WUSTL student I have talked to has been very happy with the school.
Dean Spivey and the CSO- Dean Spivey has been downright fantastic overall. He really impressed all of us at the ASW, but he has been really great towards me in particular. I've been able to build a bit of a relationship with him and have been in contact with him about a lot of things, and he has always been candid and helpful with me. He spent a over a half hour on the phone with me a few weeks ago and answered every question I had. I am very impressed by how he and his office go out and aggressively pursue firms to come to St. Louis, and although it is clear that you cannot count on your CSO to get you a job, I feel like he puts a lot of students in a position for success. I am going to have to work hard in the classroom and network a ton on my own, but it is a good feeling knowing he will aggressively go to bat for me (and for the rest of our class).
St. Louis- Aside from being my top choice market, I also think St. Louis is a fun city to spend three years. I'm a HUGE Cardinals fan and I'll probably be at Busch Stadium once a week this fall. It is a very manageable city; there are plenty of places to eat, drink, and do fun things, but it is small enough that you avoid many of the hassles of a bigger city.
Campus- I'm sure you've heard this before, but the campus is un-freaking-believable. The law building is gorgeous and the undergrad campus surrounding it is incredible. I feel distinguished just walking around the place. And the name of the law building is Anheuser-Busch Hall… seriously, how cool is that?
Atmosphere- The students and professors seem great and I just get a good vibe from the place. Sometimes you just know a place is right for you, and I’ve felt that way since the first time I stepped on campus.

Still deciding between UCI and ND. I loved WUSTL but I have come to accept the fact that WUSTL does not travel well to CA...romothesavior wrote:UCI, I think. But I could be wrong. They seem to be going hard after people from California. A couple people in the Choosing a Law School forum got scholly increases that were from Cali. Seems like they want to fight that "weak on the West Coast" reputation, and the best way to do that is to just get people from Cali to come out for school and then return.
