Re: Univ of Georgia
Can any people from UGA tell me when apartment hunting for August is best? I've seen a trickle of ads for pre-leasing, but not much. In my old school it was busiest in April/May and then again the month before classes started. Same deal?

First of all, congrats on your equalization.missvik218 wrote:Finally arrived, dated 1/28/10, 1L tuition equalization!
Did everyone else have this in their final paragraph too?!
"To accept this scholarship you will need to commit to enroll in the University of Georgia School of Law by April 1, 2010. A remind and commitment for you will be sent to you closer to that time. You must also submit you $50 seat deposit to the Admissions Office by April 15, 2010 in order to reserve your seat in the class enrolling in the Fall 2010."
What does the bolded mean? Is that more than just sending in your seat deposit?
I had the same text on mine, and I was wondering the same thing today after re-reading the letter. Also, doesn't April 1 seem very soon to commit? I have an ASW at another school after April 1.

Thank you, congrats to you as well ... and YEAH I know April 1 is really early and it's stressing me out. Did nobody else have that in their letters?! Did you all just skip over it? Are you all already committed to UGA so it's not a big deal?
A lot of schools don't even have ASWs until April, what if you get pulled of a WL, what if you haven't even heard from all of your schools yet? It reads and sounds a lot like the same sort of commitment as if you signed an ED form, you're definitely going ... no backing out?!

As far as the deposit, it's $50(?), so I guess one could theoretically pay the deposit, then just eat the cost if something else comes up. This is obviously not a great option; it seems sort of dishonest. I don't know the nature of the April 1 commitment, so I guess I'll just wait for the mail that tells me what this commitment involves.

It does seem a little dishonest... but in my understanding its very common practice to pay for a couple seat deposits if you're not yet decided.rad law wrote:I mean UGA is my realistic top choice because of the money, but I've got a couple other choices.missvik218 wrote:Thank you, congrats to you as well ... and YEAH I know April 1 is really early and it's stressing me out. Personally, I think its fine so long as you withdraw when you've ruled a place out - as a courtesy to other prospective students as much as to the educational institution.

Re: Univ of Georgia
I think that's the key here .. it is very common practice to pay your deposit at a few schools if you're still undecided to hold your place, I had intended to do this with UGA being that it's only $50. But this April 1st commitment is in addition to the April 15th deposit, I reads as though it's a bit more binding than simply paying your deposit to hold your spot and your scholarship.rad law wrote:I mean UGA is my realistic top choice because of the money, but I've got a couple other choices.missvik218 wrote:Thank you, congrats to you as well ... and YEAH I know April 1 is really early and it's stressing me out. Re: Univ of Georgia
Status checker informed me I had been held for further review last week...
LSAT: 158, 165
GPA: 3.23
Does UGA really average LSAT scores? Does anyone know their official stance on multiple LSATs for admission purposes?
I was extremely disappointed to be held with a 165... based on LSN, UGA is all about the numbers and 164+ seems to generally be auto admit. Anyone else held with a 165+ (or have insight on UGA's multiple LSAT policy)?

I had never heard anything about UGA averaging LSAT scores. I have a 151 and 163, which (if they do average), could explain why I've been held for so long.ChattTNdt wrote:Status checker informed me I had been held for further review last week...

Re: Univ of Georgia
I read somewhere that they take highest LSAT score. I stopped by and talked to the admissions people yesterday. They are just reserving the right to wait until the last minute before making a decision on the people who have been wait listed. They have already surpassed the number of applicants from last year and still have a ton of them to go through. They also told me that applicants "held for further review" should know something by the first of March. Hope this helps and hang in there.

I think it's your GPA. I have a 158/164 so if they averaged, it would be 161. I don't think they would have admitted me if they were looking at a 161.

They do not average. I had 149 and 164 LSAT and got in.

That's great news! Now I'm pretty confident I'll still get in.
and props to the guy who talked to admissions and found out those of us who are held will hear something by March.

Granted, my GPA is bad. But based on the way UGA seems to focus admission decisions on LSAT score, and a look at their LSN graph, I expected that UGA of all places would look past a weak GPA for a 164+.
Since my hold here is the first decision of any sort I've received in my cycle so far, it has cast a little doubt on my overall application... makes me worry there's something inherently unlikable about my PS or something. I'm staying positive though.

I have 165/3.1 and got in. So you are probably really close. Good luck!ChattTNdt wrote:eandy wrote:I think it's your GPA. I have a 158/164 so if they averaged, it would be 161. I don't think they would have admitted me if they were looking at a 161.

This is good to know! Slightly OT, but does anyone know of schools who DO average? I thought it had fallen out of favor among adcomms, but I'm sure some places still do it.married0L wrote:They do not average.

So at what point do I get back up with them and try to negotiate for a little more aid? Just a little bit more to really clinch it.

Well I guess you could do it anytime really. I emailed Paul Rollins and asked him if there was any way I could get a scholarship. He responded quickly, saying that he didn't have any scholarship money for me right now, but that it is possible that some could become available after the first seat deposit deadline.married0L wrote:So at what point do I get back up with them and try to negotiate for a little more aid? Probably like my 1L tuition equalization?! I know there is still a lot of February left and all of March but I have a sneaking suspicion that I'm not going to be ready to commit to UGA by/on April 1st ... anyone else in my situation's money will at that point be redistributed whether we end up eventually attending or not.shawty18ga wrote:Well I guess you could do it anytime really. It might be worth writing these people a letter or giving them a phone call at some point to see if they can push the commitment deadline back. However, I am in the exact same situation as you, but honestly, it's no use being this dismal about our $ this early in the game. Let's wait and see what this "commitment" involves; then we can start panicking.missvik218 wrote:Probably like my 1L tuition equalization?! Re: Univ of Georgia
So Georgia (very cordially I might add), sent me an email saying they had received my application etc., however my personal statement was not there. They simply asked me to attach it over email and said that it wasn't a problem. Of course I was extremely apologetic but at the same time I knew I had attached the PS. I even double-checked LSAC and looked over the transmitted pdf and it was there so I sent them the PS and mentioned the error on LSAC's part. Does anybody think this will hurt me at all, even it's just delaying their decision by another week? Thanks!
Seriously? What are you waiting for?
