If anyone with Athens experience would help answer the following questions, I will appreciate it.

1) Where in Athens do the families with young children live? I have heard of families in East Athens, but I was not sure. I am debating between living in Watkinsville (and sending my children to Oconee County schools), and living in Athens (living in a family friendly neighborhood and sending my kids to private school).

2) What sources besides Craigslist have info about houses for rent?

3) Are there any property management companies around who would help a relocating family find a nice place over the phone?

4) Does anyone have recommendations for private schools (my daughter starts Kindegarten this fall) within 15-20 minutes of UGA?

Thanks in advance.

1. Families live all over the place. East side, Normaltown (ARMC), Boulevard, Timothy Rd. area, etc. My wife and I live in Normaltown area (behind the Navy school, soon to be Medical College of Georgia) and we love it here. Small houses, lots of families, very affordable and very close to everything. I can be at the law school in five minutes or less, and could probably ride a bike there in 20 minutes.

2. Craigslist, sadly, is probably your best bet. Since we live here, I would say the absolute best way to find something is simply by driving around. There are for rent signs everywhere. Also, you might want to use like bulldogrent? I haven't used them but I know some people who have. Just google athens realty and you should find lots of property management companies willing to help.

3. See above.

4. I am pretty familiar with the private schools in the area as I work at one and many of our friends send their kids to different ones. The ones that stand out at Athens Academy (probably the strongest, but also the most expensive), Prince Avenue Christian (strong school, but located a ways out from town), Athens Christian (I know the headmaster here and he is a great guy, previous UGA Law grad), Westminster Christian Academy (smaller school in Watkinsville, but good school from everything I have heard).

Might I also add, please don't live on the East side. It is like a different city, all to itself, and has absolutely no character. Many undergraduates live on that side of town and it takes forever to get anywhere you want to go. I have lived here two years and the only time I go to the East side is for the vet and to drive to Augusta to go to the Masters.

Outing myself a little here, but if anyone else is interested in living at 909 Broad, I just signed a lease today for a 2BR/2BA. Rent would be 625+utilities for a 3 block walk to school/nightlife.
PM me : )

Note: I am putting this in both threads, because some people post in one but not the other.

For those hoping to get more (or any) scholarship money, apparently a lot more people than they were anticipating sent in deposits... so you'll have to wait until after the second deposit deadline to know.

Yep, got that e-mail too. That's what they get for making their first seat deposit $50.

Yeah really. Duh everyone is going to send in a deposit. It's FIFTY dollars! The huge rise in rankings probably didn't hurt either... I'm leaning towards Wake but it was definitely worth $50 to delay my decision a couple more months.

II was dinged - twice. I was put on the WL and then notified on Saturday that my name is being removed from the WL - thus, declined. In case I didn't get the message, UGa sent me a shorter more tersely phrased letter today reiterating the most important aspects of the decision - rejected. I was curious what the second snail mail letter could say different from the first. May be they thought the first one was a bit ambiguous?

I got a second rejection letter too. I got a WL letter a few months ago, never responded and thus didn't get added, then today I got a very short letter telling me they don't want me. That's fine, UGA, I didn't want you either and plus you already rejected me once!

I'm a 1L at UGA, so does anybody have any questions while you're waiting?

I'll be a 1L next year at UGA. Thanks for offering to answer questions. So:

1. Admissions told me that they assign sections randomly and don't use an LSAT/GPA index to try to create "equal" sections. I'm a little worried that this can create a lottery.... You could be a scholarship student in a section with a bunch of people who squeaked in or you could be in a section with all the full-ride kids, making it far harder to be at the top of the curve in one section then in the other. What is your experience with this?

2. At ASD, someone mentioned that UGA has an early-start program that is going to begin about 2 weeks before everyone else. Has this been done in years past? If so, do you have any idea about what the program consisted of?

Thanks again.

OMG, I really hope this turns into a "taking questions" thread!!

Also, I'm sorry to everyone who has been rejected twice - must have been some sort of administrative screw up.

Got a rejection letter today. Seemed kinda unnecessary since I declined their offer to go on the wait list well over a month ago.

So ...I'm not to proud to beg....please please please go to wake! Did I say please? I'll personally repay your 50$ and as an added incentive I will help you move! Move out transportation and move in. All inclusive :-)

You have a 171, don't you? I think that makes you the big swinging dick...so you probably don't have to worry.

I personally would do the Oconee thing with the kids, or live in a neighboring county like Barrow or even Gwinnett. Clarke public schools are bad. Oconee is snobby. If you want to live in Athens and do private schooling, neighborhoods off of Timothy Road are nice, or the eastside.

Try Athens Banner Herald or Apartment Finder.

I haven't had much luck with property management companies in Athens.

Private schools, I just know of Athens Christian. Does it have to be Athens?

I think Athens Academy is also a solid option for k-12. Not sure bout cost though.

Athens Academy is a great school. Really snobby kids, but a great school.
