I think this is one of the more common misconceptions about admissions out there (at least with how we do it at Illinois). I offer a lot more money than I actually have, knowing that not everyone will accept. (Just like we admit more people than we can actually seat.) We use past year's data to try and predict what the yield will be on offers this year, but it isn't an exact science by any means. It usually means that I am a bit over my scholarship budget when all the second deposits come in. When someone drops out of the class at this point in the cycle I try to replace them and fill the seat, but it doesn't always mean there are funds available for scholarships.

Well, if you assume that they only made $$ offers up to their budget, I think you'd be correct. However, I believe when they make admissions, they're going to assume that a certain number of people they've offered money to are going to withdraw, so they award more $$ than they really have. Now what happens when those people don't withdraw? They suddenly find themselves overextended in that they've promised more money than they really have. So unless enough people with $$ withdraw to where they are back under their budget, they are still giving out more $$ than they have, so they can't offer additional money to people off the WL. Make sense?

So am i then correct in assuming that Illinois is over-budget right now? We are at budget currently. I have not seen nearly the attrition over the summer that I thought we would, and that is the reason for the relative lack of movement on our wait list. Another thing to keep in mind is that the vast majority of our scholarship funds are merit based, and I try to keep those levels consistent throughout the cycle.

I'm not sure if this has been answered before but what is the process for students who do not have laptops? Do we take out extra loan money? If so, how do we go about applying for that?

What's all this business about it may only be filled out by a licensed provider?

I have records of everything that is required... Why on Earth would I need to have a doctor fill this out for me? I mean, we're going to be lawyers, right? Shouldn't we get used to filling out paperwork?!?!?

Besides, I can't afford a licensed provider until I have insurance... and I won't have insurance until school starts! Catch-22, anyone?

Take it to your undergraduate institution and get their health services department to fill it out. I doubt they would charge you much.

I believe I called about that and was told that if the copies of my immunization records from my previous doctors' offices were signed by a nurse, that would be fine.

You can take your records to the local health department and they will complete it and sign it for you (probably a nurse) for a fraction of what an M.D. would charge you.

I spoke to someone in a gov't/public interest organization and they mentioned that they regularly take summer interns and pay them through the federal work study program. They contributed $2-3/hour towards their wages with the gov't adding another $8-10 or what have you. Is this a possibility to fund a PI/gov't position next summer? How does this work and who would you contact to arrange something like that? I'm not sure how it works as I didn't take advantage of work study as an undergrad. Thanks!

Yes, both through the College and a student organization, Public Interest Law Foundation (PILF)
