Dean Pless, could u elaborate on this? Thanks! (P.S. I'd still be ready to take an offer at a moment's notice, regardless of money!)
I think this is one of the more common misconceptions about admissions out there (at least with how we do it at Illinois). I offer a lot more money than I actually have, knowing that not everyone will accept. (Just like we admit more people than we can actually seat.) We use past year's data to try and predict what the yield will be on offers this year, but it isn't an exact science by any means. It usually means that I am a bit over my scholarship budget when all the second deposits come in. When someone drops out of the class at this point in the cycle I try to replace them and fill the seat, but it doesn't always mean there are funds available for scholarships.

Well, if you assume that they only made $$ offers up to their budget, I think you'd be correct. However, I believe when they make admissions, they're going to assume that a certain number of people they've offered money to are going to withdraw, so they award more $$ than they really have. Now what happens when those people don't withdraw? They suddenly find themselves overextended in that they've promised more money than they really have. So unless enough people with $$ withdraw to where they are back under their budget, they are still giving out more $$ than they have, so they can't offer additional money to people off the WL. Make sense?
As usual, Nancy said this better than I did.

So am i then correct in assuming that Illinois is over-budget right now? I understand the concept of giving out more seats and money than is actually available, but i thought that both of those factors would be back down to the intended levels by this time. If this is the case that Illinois is over-budgeted as of this moment, are you indeed expecting for several scholarship-receiving admits to drop out and be replaced with sticker-paying admits? I hope I'm not sounding bad when asking all this, but I'm just really curious to how all this is intended to work and how it is actually working.
We are at budget currently. I have not seen nearly the attrition over the summer that I thought we would, and that is the reason for the relative lack of movement on our wait list. Another thing to keep in mind is that the vast majority of our scholarship funds are merit based, and I try to keep those levels consistent throughout the cycle.

Dean Pless (or anyone else who knows),

I'm not sure if this has been answered before but what is the process for students who do not have laptops? Do we take out extra loan money? If so, how do we go about applying for that?

Thanks!

You can extend your COA budget one time for the purchase of a computer. Julie Griffin can assist you with that, just get in touch with her.

Room and Board $12,058.00
Books and Supplies $1,800.00
Other Expenses $2,760.00

You can't squeeze a laptop into that somewhere?

Sorry, I'm snarky first thing in the morning.

So... is the immunization form giving anyone else fits?

What's all this business about it may only be filled out by a licensed provider?

I have records of everything that is required... Why on Earth would I need to have a doctor fill this out for me? I mean, we're going to be lawyers, right? Shouldn't we get used to filling out paperwork?!?!?

Besides, I can't afford a licensed provider until I have insurance... and I won't have insurance until school starts! Catch-22, anyone?

Take it to your undergraduate institution and get their health services department to fill it out. I doubt they would charge you much.

I believe I called about that and was told that if the copies of my immunization records from my previous doctors' offices were signed by a nurse, that would be fine.

You might want to double check though and give them a call.

You can take your records to the local health department and they will complete it and sign it for you (probably a nurse) for a fraction of what an M.D. would charge you.

Also a good idea I hadn't thought about... thanks, yhezel!

P.S. I just looked over at ur bio on the Illinois website. Undefeated softball season? Nice. If im admitted, can i audition for the team?

oh in that case, I forgot a soft factor that could help me get off the waitlist.

I am a power-hitting center fielder with blazing speed that WILL ensure your undefeated record this fall. Should I promptly write a LOCI to inform you!?!?!?!

...or you can just PM me and ill out myself so you can check my application

Yeah, we don't let students play on our team so I try to stock the school with bad softball players, not good ones.

Dean Pless,

I spoke to someone in a gov't/public interest organization and they mentioned that they regularly take summer interns and pay them through the federal work study program. They contributed $2-3/hour towards their wages with the gov't adding another $8-10 or what have you. Is this a possibility to fund a PI/gov't position next summer? How does this work and who would you contact to arrange something like that? I'm not sure how it works as I didn't take advantage of work study as an undergrad. Thanks!

It is possible. You would work with our office of financial aid once you are a student here.

Does Illinois offer any sort of additional financial support for those doing a public interest internship?

Yes, both through the College and a student organization, Public Interest Law Foundation (PILF)
