Dean Pless,

How long does it take for files to go from "Complete" to "Under Review"? Thanks.

We have been averaging 3 to 4 weeks. Then one week "In Review" before a decision comes out. I have slowed down a little these past two weeks due to travel for yield events, but will have decisions out this afternoon and another batch out on March 25th. We received close to 400 applications last week and now have received over 4700 applications for this cycle.

I know many other law schools are showing an increase in applications this cycle. Is this number a significant increase for Illinois? From what I'm hearing from various sources, many people believe that this increase in applications is not due to many more people applying to law school, rather that applicants are now applying to more schools than they usually would have in previous cycles. Do you believe that this is the case for Illinois?

We are up 40% from same time last year. We received 3,500 applications last year. Nationally applications are up 7% and applicants are up 4.2%. I don't think the increase at Illinois can be attributed solely to the national increase.

Dean Pless,

I'm not sure if I can make it to the Admitted Student Day, and I was thinking of just going there for a weekend the following week. Is there anything I can do during the weekend (ie. visit a class, tour, meet with current students) I dont know if the school becomes deserted over the weekend or if I can still get a good feel for the school even if I miss the Admitted Student Day.

If you are seriously considering Illinois, go to the student day if at all possible. It gives you a great feel for the school, the students, the professors, etc.

The problem is scheduling, I would go to the ASD if it were just up to me.

We don't have any weekend classes. We are able to have a current student give you a tour on a weekend at times. Just call the office and we will try to arrange something for you.

Dean Pless,

If you try to appeal a decision after the 30-day post-decision period, what are the chances you will be reconsidered for admission? I had a new LSAT and I wanted to appeal, but I sent in my letter after 30 days had passed since my rejection. Could you clear this up for me? Thanks.

Dean Pless,

Thank you.

That's pretty much all I can say right now. See you in August if I don't before!

The chances of a reversal are fairly low overall, but being a little late on the 30 day window isn't a factor in the decision process.

Dear Dean Pless,

In a previous post, you wrote(something to the effect of) "I am building a community and have to make sure I let people in who won't disturb that" in response to a question about disorderly conduct misdemeanors. I am wondering if your vision for UIUC's community includes people whose histories indicate that they may have challeneged the status quo - for example, on issues concerning the financial crisis, civil rights, or racial issues.

In my humble opinion, such individuals make strong contributions to any community, though such individuals might be thought of as disruptions or provocateurs. Such individuals might also be considered to be "disturbing" the community, even if their viewpoint is communicated in a way that's consistent with law, order and general social norms.

So my question is, would such activities and/or participation in such activities hamper an application to UIUC, or was your comment about building community really directed towards illegality, mayham, and violence rather than intellectual disruption? Sorry to put words in your mouth in my opening statement, I know that was not your exact quote.

I think you meant "mayhem."

"Mayham" sounds like a springtime sandwich meat.

For people wondering about where to live, I just signed a lease at 608 S. State. It's about 14 blocks from the law school, 6 blocks from the Green St. bars, and 6 blocks from downtown Champaign. It's not the best looking building from the outside, but they're great looking apartments: They're furnished, hardwood floors in the bedroom, and newly updated kitchens. They are two bedrooms, but you can choose to lease them as a one bedroom plus a study, which is what I'm doing. My monthly rent is $765, with no utilities included. Sure, it's a little pricey compared to what you CAN do closer to campus, but I didn't want to deal with the problems some of the cheaper places were sure to bring. Additionally, some current 1Ls at Illinois have mentioned the 303 W. Green St. building as a good place to live: These are directly across the street, are larger, and are owned by the same company (Bankier Apartments bankierapts.com)

Hey! Yeah, I am! I'm pretty set on living/working in one of the greater Chicago/DC/St. Louis markets, UIUC gave me great $$$, and I can't really justify paying a ton more for a degree from either Cornell or USC when job prospects are so similar (at least in my selected markets) between those schools and UIUC. I'm excited!

Where are you leaning?
