Haven't heard a peep from them in over a month. Is this normal? From LSN, it doesn't seem like they've ever taken this long to make so many decisions. This goes for every school this cycle. Everything is all FUBARed up.

I heard somewhere that they had some kind of fiasco last year (might be thinking about another school though), so maybe they're being extra cautious this year?

No, you are right. At least from what I heard on here, they almost lost their median because yield was unexpectedly low. They had to call up applicants that they had yield-protect rejected above median and offer them big schollies. I have no source for that other that hearsay from this board, though, so take it FWIW.

Finally IR 4/23. I had kind of forgotten about UMN and it is my home state school! Anyone else finally IR? Not sure I am even considering the school anymore, but I guess it would be nice to have an answer. Seems a bit ridiculous not to get to all of the applications before the deposit deadline. Perhaps they need to move their app deadline up a bit!

Good luck all, I missed my deposit deadline and lost my seat today. I hope one of you gets my seat.

So it looks like they're already taking applicants off the waitlist (some even with offers of full rides), while they haven't even rendered decisions one way or another on several other applicants yet.

What a weird process they run...

And congrats, Kitzhof... my post was not meant as an affront to your acceptance, just an observation on the UMN admissions process.

Taking people off the waitlist before they've even rendered decisions to everyone...I dunno how I feel about this. Congrats to the above poster, but the more I think about Minnesota, the more appealing it becomes to me.

The same here, IR for the third time 4/27. Do your numbers have a shot here? I don't know mine do.

+1, with fairly large scholly, for those who went to the ASD, what are your thoughts of this school. Also, I was already set on Illinois, but Minnesota nows is about 7k cheaper a year, makes things difficult, so if anyone visited both schools, I would really appreciate your comments of comparisons.

The visit is what sold me on UMN. Unless you're deadset on Chicago biglaw, I'd take UMN. I absolutely loved the school when I visited, and Minneapolis is an amazing city. For me, it came down to UMN and WUSTL and I chose UMN mainly because if I end up stuck in the home market, I'd much rather get stuck in the Twin Cities than in St. Louis (plus, anecdotally, WUSTL grads often have trouble finding jobs in St. Louis because the firms there think all the WUSTL grads are going to leave the city as soon as they can, absent strong ties to the area, but that's not really relevant to you—I digress). UMN dominates the Twin Cities like few schools do their home market. Plus, the Twin Cities are an absolutely great place to be.

As I said, if you're set on Chicago biglaw, then UIUC is going to have easier access to those jobs. However, Urbana-Champaign as a location sucks pretty bad; I'd much rather spend 3 years in the Twin Cities than there. Similarly, UMN has some awesome clinics and other opportunities available for students to get involved in thanks to its ties to the Twin Cities legal market. I'm not really sure what kind opportunities you're going to find in U-C. And outside of Chicago, UMN is going to carry more weight than UIUC (despite what some trolls may tell you now that UIUC jumped up in the rankings for one year—it's amazing how people jump on the bandwagons of the yearly US News fluctuations); my impression of UIUC has always been that's it's great for Chicago biglaw but won't get you much else outside that market. Also, as far as clerkships go, UMN and UIUC place similarly into Article III clerkships, with UMN getting a larger percentage of its students into COA clerkships.

As far as the ASD, both the current students and new-admits that I met were all incredibly friendly. I didn't get any sort of ultra-competitive vibe and it seemed like the students were all pretty laid back; that could have just been the nature of the event though. The TORT performace was awesome, and I got to meet Walter Mondale! We sat in on Prof. Carpenter's conlaw class which was well run and interesting. The building itself is bemoaned by a lot of people because it's an ugly brick building that looks like a high school, fueling the Mondale High jokes. Beyond the outer facade, I thought the facilities were nice; the library is especially awesome—tons of study space—and it's apparently pretty easy to get a study carrel if you want one (they're like $10 for the year of something).

I know a lot of people were sold on UMN when they visited, so you may want to visit if you can. If you have any other questions feel free to post or PM me.

I think so, but I'm not the ideal candidate... This is from their class profile:

LSAT Median: 167
25-75 Percentile: 160-168 (I have a 164)

GPA Median: 3.64
25-75 Percentile: 3.30-3.85 (I have a 3.6 LSAC, 3.67 UC)

I'm not URM, either. We'll see. Im honestly shocked I haven't been rejected yet, but with this cycle, I'm sure its just a matter of time.

UMN isn't all about the numbers, I can attest to that. I made it in with a lower LSAT (159). Good luck, hang in there.

I am still waiting for a 1st response from MN. I applied mid-Feb. This is totally ridiculous. Anyone have insights into their admissions process/strategy?

Sweet I got a waitlist email! Thats shocking, since I was essentially denied anything 30+.

Just as I finished sumbitting my seat deposit at Hastings, too. Oh well, I'm happy. And they let people off the waitlist, so I guess thats good!
