Is there a chronological component to the recent flood of waitlists? People complete in September yesterday, October today etc...

Edit: Typing this before the post above this posted. Guess that answers my question

Idk what I would be more mad about: having gotten the WL email, or continuing this purgatory I am in right now.

WL e-mail today. 170/3.8.

Not a big shock, I apparently don't play well on the East coast.

Do they send the e-mails in one wave or do you all have different e-mail times? (aka how nervous should I be right now?)

Surprised at the waitlist, and a little perturbed that I applied in late October and it took them this long to respond. I will likely withdraw within the next few days.

Been a pretty disappointing cycle so far, with WL's at Chicago, Penn, and now UVA. I'm seriously concerned that my PS must not have been as good as I thought. :?

Same exact numbers, same WL's, same sentimest. I'm thinking this economy really, really screwed us.

Meh, I think it's more the shift in strategy that's screwing you. They are really milking this ED deadline for all its worth.

This no deadline ED is really fucking all of us, who don't want to commit to the school, but are still very interested in it.

UVA was one one of my top realistic choices, and after writing a why UVA and having numbers above median (171, 3.6), like many of you, I thought my chances would be extremely strong. It appears that writing a Why UVA? is not taken very seriously at all anymore, and the only way to express interest is locking yourself in with ED. It is understandable from the school's perspective, but sucks as an applicant that I must do ED if I want to have a chance at UVA. I wouldn't be suprised if within a few years nearly every school has an ED program like UVA.

Making their cycle even stranger, is UVA in October and November, were accepting everbody with a 168+ and 3.8+. While this is probably just sour grapes, it almost feels like they made a stupid mistake and accepted too many people in the beggining of the cycle, and now are rejecting aplplicants who are more qualified. It can't be all just YP, and if it is it is pretty stupid, as it seems many of these people who are rejected right now, including me, wrote why UVA and had serious interest in the school.

Your GPA is severely below the median.

That is what probably hurt you.

Actually it was 3.85+ and many were conditional acceptances requiring those students to maintain and graduate with their 3.85+ GPA.

Also, having too many qualified applicants is nothing new to this cycle. I was told by an adcomm that out of 7,800 applicants last year almost 4,000 of them were people they'd like to admit. They ended up making about 1,000 offers and turning away 3,000 people they would have liked to admit but didn't have the space for.

That is a pretty revealing observation by that adcomm. anyone have any comments on that comment's implications?

I meant that being on their 75% LSAT and slightly above their 25% GPA, I was an above median overall student.
My last post probably stretched a little too far, but it seems they were much more lenient to begin the cycle, and have become far tougher now later in the cycle. It is well known that most schools say you have better chances if you apply earlier, but I think they have done it to the extent that it may have hurt their statistics.

I don't think that's entirely true. From what I've seen and heard, UVA is fairly protective of their 3.85 median. Someone with a 25% GPA and 75% LSAT would bring that median down.

As harsh as this is going to sound, I believe it to be the reality.

There is no way UVA hurt itself statistically this application cycle. As vanwinkle, jaws, and others will tell you, they have seen a concerted effort by UVA to collect 171 LSATs. The fact that they may have reached that goal is what (seemingly) led to the large (and unfortunate) waitlist we saw today.

I'm pretty sure UVA is banking on several WL people to switch to ED. UVA knows that it's getting late in the cycle and people are getting pessimistic about their chances at CCN and want to lock up MVP, and this is probably their best shot to do so. I really think it's as simple as that.
