How generous is UVA with grant aid anyway? Is it reserved only for students whose parents make less than say 100k?

Honestly, the typical "need-based aid" given is federal loans. Schools claim that grants and scholarships are awarded on "a determination of both merit and need" or something like that, but truthfully for the most part you should just expect to get loans from most schools, including UVA.

If you got a scholarship already, that's probably going to be the amount of money you'll be offered in total. Estimate your loans to be tuition+COL minus your existing scholarship.

Quick question y'all - do they admit via email/status checkers? Or is it by mail? I went UR/whatever their equivalent is on 11/17 & am getting a little tired of waiting...

Thanks!!

I'm still UR as of 11/6.

They call you. If it helps, I went under review at the beginning of Nov. and only heard back about a week ago.

My status checker had been "pending review/decision" since 11/02. Today it displays "pending review/decision" with the current date of 12/28. Is there any reason the date would update like that?

Who knows, it's anybody's guess. But you made me check mine. Still 11/04.

I got their UR equivalent on 11/16 and have been waiting since then; others have been waiting even longer. Remember that they were buried under Siberia-style amounts of snow recently.

Under review since 10/27 and out of state. To me it seems they are working on getting their instate requirements met before deciding what they have to go after for out of state applicants to keep their numbers where they want them.

I'll say this again for the folks that missed it last time.

Last year, I went complete 11/10. I heard nothing, saw nothing change on the status checker, until I got an E-mail asking them to call me on 1/29. That phone call was my acceptance.

Be patient. I keep trying to tell people this. The fact that you haven't heard back yet does not mean you've been rejected, it means that so far you haven't, and that's good. They do the obvious cases first (auto-admits and auto-rejects) and everyone in the middle takes much longer to review.

Dean Trujillo explained it to me like this.

Of the 7880 applicants last year 780 were in state and the rest were out of state.

That means that there were 780 applications for 140 seats in state and 7100 applicants for 220 seats for out of state.

Thats a ratio of almost 35 to 1 seat to applicant ratio for out of state applicants.

Combine that with the record number of apps this year and I would expect it to take a while for them to review the applicants to determine who to accept/wl/reject to fill those seats.

Just be patient.

Oh, and to the person who asked about straight call vs. email to call, that might depend on who's contacting you. I only got a call from Cordel Faulk, with a follow up email, but it seems the people being contacted by Jason Dugas get an email first. Other than that I doubt it means anything, but idk for sure.

are you serious?!?! i've actually never heard of that kind of blatant effort to maintain medians. i guess if youve got a pretty high gpa, however, it would take a massive meltdown to bring your gpa below a 3.85 though.

you should take all of your classes next semester pass/fail.

That is pretty absurd.

my acceptance just said 3.85 to maintain scholarship money, which i thought was reasonable, but to maintain acceptance? geeeeez louise talk about pressure if you are borderline.

Does anyone know if this was required for ED acceptances as well? Imagine submitting only one app only to find out almost a year later you have nowhere to attend...

Just don't update your transcript with LSAC and it won't matter.

It'll say it in your acceptance letter, or should.

For those that are subjected to this, it has clearly said so in their acceptance letter. However, there's a really easy way around this:

TITCR. Send your final transcript directly to UVA, and not to LSAC. Your LSDAS GPA will not change as a result and you'll fulfill the requirements.

I've also updated in December. Since many admits have said their status checkers never updated to a new review date, is this a bad sign? I know at Duke and Georgetown, it's a sign that a decision is coming soon. Is it consensus that this is not the case at UVA?

I don't know but my app has had the date changed three times in the last two weeks. I submitted on the 14th, status checker said complete on the 15th, changed the date to the 21st and then the 28th. I am not sure what is going on with them. Hopefully its not something bad.

No acceptance letter here, just asking because I'm considering next cycle.

Couple questions regarding ASW/ASD

When is it/are they?

And do you think they would let me attend with my accepted friend even though I am only WLed? He wants to go with me and is willing to go on a non ASD/ASW but I would hate to deprive him of going to that day just because I'm not accepted.

I applied three weeks ago, but just got my LSAT score yesterday (first time taker). On my status checker, it still says "application received", which I think is the same as before. Although since getting my LSAT score, my recommenders are now listed on the status checker, so I guess something happened.

Any idea how long it will take to receive a decision? My #'s are 3.82/173 and I am a Virginia resident, so I think I should be in pretty good shape, but looking at LSN it's clear that nothing is guaranteed.

My UVA application went final December 16th, and as of of January 3rd, my online status is "Congratulations!" A very nice thing to see right before bedtime! :D

My stats for the reference of others still waiting...

LSAT: 171
UGPA: 3.4 (graduated in 2004)
In-state applicant

Good luck to all!
