For those who were deferred. Any guesses as to what happens with our status checker? Mine still says DR 11/20. Will it change to applied. Is it out of commission for now?

Guesses?

from looking at the EA Deferred thread from last year, in march it changes to Complete as of a particular date (i.e. 03/11) and soon afterwards (maybe a week or so) it will go to decision again which will either be an acceptance, denial, or placement on the reserve list for review again in june.

EAC 11/5, DR 12/11
I called and it turns out that Cornell has requested an interview with me. I thought this interesting because its not really a decision, despite what the status checker says. Anyone know anything about this...why they give them, who gets them, etc??? I'm supposed to call to set up an interview time....kinda nervous

Why? Obviously helpful for them if you're borderline, although I didn't know CU interviewed...are you still an undergrad at Cornell? If so, sounds too convenient for them to pass up, especially given this year's overwhelming amount of applicants.

Indeed. I'll be here :)

Me too! Yay for living in California. I only have to wait until 9:30 to know I have another day of torture awaiting me. I am worried we will get nada tonight cause of the two day delay and not working on Saturdays.

A couple of TLS'ers have gotten interviews this cycle. They seemed to be non-trad candidates who didn't have auto-admit #'s (though not sure what auto-admit for Cornell #'s would look like this cycle).

Are you close enough to travel to Ithaca for the interview? If not, you might be able to interview over the phone.

(Usually, interviews are reserved for people who are put on the wait list).

Let us know how things turn out. Good luck.

Are you an int'l applicant? I heard that some schools (like BU) do interviews with int'l applicants.

Nope, not international. I actually go to Cornell right now as an undergrad. I called the office after I saw I was DR and I told the women who answered that I could interview in person since I was a Cornell student, but she said it didn't really matter and that admissions typically does the interviews over the phone. We'll see how it goes...

You are obviously being seriously considered. I'd go in person. FWIW I would kill for an interview. I feel like it could make a huge difference.

I'm just curious as to how you know that interviews are typically reserved for applicants put on the waitlist... I see that this is your second cycle, have you had any experience with this? It actually seems slightly counter intuitive (to me anyways) to interview applicants whom the adcoms already know they are likely to waitlist ....if they felt I was borderline in numbers or something they could have just waitlisted me right of the bat, or deferred me to regular decision to compare me against whatever else comes along. It would seem that the purpose of an interview would be to help solidify whatever decision they were inclined to make (yes or no), not serve as a vehicle to lead them to yet another not-really-a-decision decision. Why waste the time? But again, nothing is usually what it seems in these circumstances, I guess.

As for the interviews:

The following is from the TLS Cornell Bio:

Dean Geiger mentions that the Law School offers interviews to all students on the waitlist. In recent years, due to high yield on initial offers, Cornell hasn’t delved deeply into its waitlist in order to fill its class. The Law School prefers applicants on the wait list who stay in contact with the Law School via letters of continued interest. Regarding transfer applicants, the main factors to gaining transfers to Cornell are first year academic success and exemplary recommendations.

As for the adcoms interviewing people they are likely to put on waitlists, I think you misunderstood what I was saying. They usually don't interview people with the intent of putting them on a waitlist. It's the other way around, they offer people on waitlists the opportunity to interview to help them get off the waitlist. They typically don't do interviews before making an initial decision. You are in a unique situation. The interview is a good sign as Shartree has mentioned (she is one of the TLSers who got an interview this cycle).

As for my personal experience with interviews--I visited the campus before I got put on the summer waitlist. As such, I was unable to visit Cornell for a formal interview. Though I am positive that my visit helped strengthen my application this time around (i.e. in the part of the Cornell App where it asks me to name people who have influenced my decision to apply, I was able to put a couple of names of people/professors I met, and it helped with the "Why Cornell" portion of the app). The interview is definitely a good sign.

If I were in your situation, or rather, from what little I know of your situation (don't know your #'s, or quality of app, etc.), I would say that doing an in person interview can only help your case (assuming you have decent people skills). I think it's a good opportunity to show the ADCOMS that you are SERIOUSLY considering Cornell, and were willing to travel (and incur the associated costs) to demonstrate that your interest goes beyond shooting them an app as a backup. Not to mention, if they do offer you a spot--you have a better idea of what you are saying yes or no to. Also, if you do plan to visit, contact the admissions office and see if they can schedule a campus tour for you, as well as sit in on a few classes. This will also help demonstrate your interest--as well as give you material for a future LOCI.

P.S. Sounds like Shartree is going to send you some good info via PM.

EDIT: Just saw Cornell is your Undergrad. If you are in Ithaca already, some of this might not apply.

30 minutes until (potentially) another round of DRs. Everyone ready and appropriately flipped out?
