Well, I guess after getting into H and S it takes a little more to really get you going.

I'm not sure about the first weekend, I'll be attending the second one.

beesknees wrote:Does anyone know of stories of people successfully negotiating some merit aid from Michigan after being no-offered? I would love to attend Michigan and even the smallest amount of money would be able to help me mentally justify the outrageous debt.

Kind of like that expensive dress that fits like it was made for you and you're dying to buy, but don't because its too extravagant and you could get a similar (though less desirable) dress for 50% less at a different store. But getting aid would be like that dress going on sale for 15% off. Its still expensive and still extravagant, but you feel like its a little bit more ok to spend it. Ok, law school isn't really like shopping, but my mental barrier to "purchasing" a law school is very similar.

as someone with a borderline addiction to shopping, im loving and totally relating to this analogy haha (especially since my discovery of the AMAZING but INCREDIBLY over-priced store anthropologie haha.) im not sure about negotiating from a no-offer position, but i could try and give you some advice based on what is in my scholarship letter.

it says:

"please be aware that once we have awarded a merit scholarship, it is not our practice to compete with awards from other schools. but while we do not increase merit awards once they are made, we would be very happy to discuss any concerns you may have about financing your education."

then theres something like 'dont hesitate to call admissions about this.'

so maybe this suggests that they are receptive to people calling about money and are flexible if you have a strong interest in the school. also, maybe a tip would be to avoid mentioning any scholarships you might have from other schools and take the 'i love michigan and want to attend but...the price blah blah' route haha.

Hey question--I read on their AS website that they 'recommend PCs over Macs' if students want to take exams on laptops. I have a pretty new Macbook Pro :/ Does anyone know whether people use Apple laptops at Michigan for exams?

I visited and sat in on a class. More Macbooks in the classroom than PC's. Sort of doubt that people had a separate PC just to take exams with.

I'm a current Michigan 1L and I have a macbook, along with what I would estimate to be about 45% of the class (at least). They do just fine with the bluebook software used for exams. Congrats to everyone who has been accepted!

I've seen other schools recommend PCs because the exam software only runs on Windows. But since MacBooks can run Windows using BootCamp or Parallels, problem solved.

Sorry if this was asked earlier, but can anyone link me to Michigan's loan repayment/forgiveness program for those who go into PI? I can't find it anywhere on their web site.

I don't have the link, but my understanding is that Mich's program is based solely on income. You don't have to be in PI to benefit.
