Sorry... I feel better now.
whatever man. not really looking for your sympathy. speaking as someone who was YP'd at michigan but in at CLS and NYU (and still holding out hope for HLS), i can say that michigan was actually an attractive school to me, and if i'd gotten in with $ it would have been a strongly appealing option. the fact that i'm not going to have that option because i didn't miss enough LSAT questions to have the zing that dean Z is looking for is distressing to me. and no, i'm not going to apologize for the fact that i find it distressing.

yes, i'm in at CCN and i'll be fine, and no, i don't feel sorry for myself, nor do i expect you to. doesn't change the fact that it's bullshit, and that an option i would have loved to have is shot.
Honestly I don't see how it's bull****. Michigan is trying to find the best students to fill its 2013 class. You (and myself, and my others) obviously didn't convey to UofM that we sincerely wanted to attend. If a student with stellar stats gets WL'd and truly wants to go to UofM, they can always send a LOCI to Michigan and tell them that they really, honestly want to go there (even if they got into the Columbia's and NYU's of the world).

Also, Michigan needs a way to control the size of their class. That is the function of the waitlist -- schools admit applicants at different times, then they see which acceptees will matriculate, and then they can dig into the WL.

It's not like you were rejected. If you really want it that badly, pursue it!
it's a matter of aid. i wouldn't do michigan at sticker and, though i'd be happy to be corrected on this, my impression is that any opportunities for $ are pretty minimal off the waitlist

Certainly not impossible if you've got the numbers.

That person got WLed with different numbers and retook. Not sure if it's the most applicable case.

First off, you have no idea why you didn't get accepted. Maybe that "zing" had nothing to do with your numbers. I don't know. Maybe they accepted a few candidates similar to you and wanted a little diversity. It's just not fair to say you were automatically YP'd when people with your numbers or near your numbers were accepted.

Next, you hit CCN... nuff said. If you truly wanted Michigan you would have found a way to convey that.

Finally, I think that most of the pissed off people are more pissed about not having $ to negotiate with than not being accepted.

Enjoy CCN :D

I agree. They can't accept every applicant that throws them a safety app. Also, LMAO, they cannot offer every single applicant with stellar numbers $ because it'd be really risky since the majority of applicants just want the highest ranked school. To preserve their selectivity, and also to prevent overfilling their seats, have to employ many strategies. One of them is to pick and choose among the stellar applicants who seem like they would a) be likely to attend/show genuine interest and b) might add something to the LS. The kids getting in with the lower numbers (aka me) are far safer bets for seat deposits because they know that they are probably the best school to accept them and that they don't have to give them $. That's why a 169/3.6something seems like a safer bet for admission than a 173/3.6something.

Again, enjoy CCN. Don't whine about Michigan not giving you $ leverage.

That was directed at people bitching about YP. If you were one one of those people than yes... your app sucked. But like I said, i don't think you were YP'd. If you have crazy numbers but don't get into CCN or better, your app probably sucked. In your case, your app may not have been strong enough, but that is far away from sucking.

You can mention it in the LOCI, that money is a factor for you. Some people do get $$ of the waitlist. Someone might give up a seat who had $$ and that means $$ and seat available for someone else. Again, if you really are a YP, then you would think if you showed sincere interest they might send both money and a seat your way. Certainly worth an effort if it matter to you.

Bah, good job with the middle of the road response. So I can't scream YP, but I don't suck either. Im a unique snowflake? Looks like I might end up being the only person in my range on LSN not getting accepted.

Thanks, I was hoping there would be someone with the confidence to say that (should have known it would be you). It's no worry to me though, I'll be posting pictures of a snow-less winter where ever I end up so you can try to defrost by the glow of the computer screen. I would like to know what about your app made them much more willing to take you at a *slight* GPA drop.

you know im just messing with you right, im in not a position to make judgments on anyones apps or qualifications. just feel lucky that dean z thought i would fit in/belong. i genuinely hope that you and everyone who would attend mich if admitted gets admitted.

You're messing with me? Oh what a relief. I thought we were truely enemies. Little late for me to get in, unless they actually read the letter I sent in the day they waitlisted me and decide to give me my $45k.

It makes it slightly easier. Of course, if they don't really like you, it won't help. But if they're on the fence about you, it can be a plus. They need to fill their Summer Start section (it's the first priority, because it starts so much earlier), and from a much smaller pool. If they're not sure they want to give a spot in the Fall class to you over other applicants, but have spots open in the Summer section that need to be filled, you could be much higher in the Summer Start pecking order, and can get an offer. Honestly, besides showing a desire to be at Michigan how you can (another plus), it's a good strategy for getting an acceptance later in the cycle if you wouldn't mind actually starting in the summer.

Actually, scholarships are fairly formulaic at Michigan. Even Michigan adcomms have said that the process for awarding Dean's scholarships is little more than plugging LSAT and GPA into an equation. I would find it hard to believe that if they let someone with those high numbers in off the WL, they wouldn't offer $$. I mean, they give money to ED and deferred students who meet their criteria, two groups that you could easily get away with not giving $$ to without anyone batting an eye.

Thanks, that is exactly what I was hoping for! I'm assuming that they're on the fence about me since they told me they were waiting on my Feb LSAT to make a decision. Alas, my score went down, so now I'm not overly optimistic about my chances.
