Michigan to X: "Were sorry Mr/Ms X, your such a great candidate but we can't admit you because we don't have any room left for you at this point."
Michigan to Y 5 minutes later: "Congratulations! Welcome aboard!"
Fun fun.

Re: michigan 2010 applicants
That's strange for sure. I don't know. I'm guessing (hoping) that for people above both 75ths, and with no clear expression of Why Michigan, that this is a form of YP. I could be wrong though.0L Hoping for 1 wrote:I was a 173/3.8 with good softs and I was WL'd. According to Class of 2012 numbers, I'm above both 75ths (171/4.0). As others have already said, I think this underscores the importance of the supplemental essays, especially the Why Michigan?, which I didn't write.

I'm annoyed because Michigan's office confirmed receipt of my Why essay yesterday at 11 and waitlisted me 22 hours later. Now I don't really know if it was considered or how much different to make my LOCI. My Why essay was good! I just want to say, "hey read that essay that I just sent when considering taking my off the WL."

True. If I ran a law school, instead out outright lying, I would say this.
Me. to X: "I am not sorry to tell you that we found enough candidates that we liked that were at least as well credentialed as you. We are going to admit them rather than you. Good luck."
Me to Y 5 minutes later: "Congratulations! Welcome aboard!"

Waitlisted today. GPA, LSAT >75%, wrote a detailed Why Mich. Absolutely no clue what they're doing up there. Good luck everyone.

I don't think I've posted anything substantial on the UMich thread before this, at least not more than once. Unless Dean Z reads through all of TLS, it would be pretty hard for her to know that I post here.MF248 wrote:Dean Z may just think we're all jackasses too.IAFG wrote:i now believe in YP. huh. how about that.JollyGreenGiant wrote:+1. Can't believe you got waitlisted. That's ridiculous. Makes me think there is no rhyme or reason to any of this madness.GeePee wrote:Waitlisted today. GPA, LSAT >75%, wrote a detailed Why Mich. Absolutely no clue what they're doing up there. Good luck everyone.

I wasn't making reference to TLS, I was making a reference to her blog where she says that they don't want jackasses at UMich.GeePee wrote:I don't think I've posted anything substantial on the UMich thread before this, at least not more than once. Re: michigan 2010 applicants
YP is a ridiculous practice. It takes away genuinely interested applicants. Coming into this cycle, Michigan was in my top 3 for schools. A little bit of money would have gone A LONG way.
I dunno, it just seems counter-productive to protect your yield instead of going after the best applicants possible.
Then again, I might not have been YPed. I might have just not been good enough. Either way, I'm gonna pursue the WL and try and get off of it.

Re: michigan 2010 applicants
It could be that they realize applicants of your quality will want money to attend, but they only have limited scholarship resources that they use to target different types of applicants. They then accept you off the waitlist later in the cycle and then try to give you whatever money is left over.JollyGreenGiant wrote:YP is a ridiculous practice. Re: michigan 2010 applicants
YP is an odd game. I submitted a late application to Michigan without a "why Michigan" essay and my "stats" place me squarely in YP territory but I was admitted. I am seriously considering Michigan (esp. if they offer me money), so it was probably a good move on their part.
It's a crying shame that schools feel like they have to kowtow to the metrics of USNews. I'm sure there are several highly qualified applicants that would go to places like Michigan, Penn, and Virginia if they didn't feel like they were being strung-along or that their application was not taken seriously.

Wait-listed today via email. :/
Sigh, I really wanted Michigan. My stats are in profile.

Waitlisted....
LSAT > 75%, GPA > median. Sent in a "why michigan" earlier this week (although maybe not in time). I was really hoping for a Michigan acceptance (good school, low COL, etc.) and would (will?) likely end up there unless I get a fluke YHS acceptance. I'll be lucky if I make it to April with my sanity!

Re: michigan 2010 applicants
So sorry about WLs, all. It seems like most of you have such solid numbers that you'll still be somebody's baby, for whatever that's worth. When did people that just heard about WL apply or go complete?
Seriously? What are you waiting for?
Now there's a charge.
Just kidding ... it's still FREE!
