So I got an email from Karman Hsu today giving me awarding me with a $1000 grant (so $3000 over 3 years). They said they hope they find this offer 'competitive' with other offers I receive. Seriously? $1000?

Similar numbers here! With such low offers as these, it's almost like they are just trying to up the percent of people they can say they give money to...oh wait..."92% of J.D. students are receiving some type of financial aid" (from their financial aid site).

I know money is money, and it's less I have to pay out of pocket, but it's still disheartening to be facing 200K of loans (that $3000 is just a drop in the bucket, guys).

Does anyone know how they sort applications? If two people went complete on the same day and one got dinged but the other has heard nothing, what do you think can be excepted?

Are you sure it's $3000 for three years? I also got the $1000 offer and it says it's for the 10-11 academic year and then I have to reapply. Not just renew or something, but reapply, with new financial info and a whole new review process.

Not to pour more buckets on your rained-out parade or anything. :|

It says 'reapply for this grant' which seems very close to 'renew' to me. I'm sure you can assume the same ammount unless you hit the lottery.

I just got an e-mail notifying me of my scholarship negotiation fail. It said to keep them in the loop about other offers I receive and to notify them 1-2 weeks after filling out FAFSA/NeedAccess. I did FAFSA last Thursday and NeedAccess two days ago, so I guess I should email them on Monday? I don't know why they want you to wait so long to notify them.

Taken straight from the staff directory.. You guys do know that he shortens his name to stay modest, right? Get with it.

I didn't notice an accent when he called to accept me.

Really, though...

Does anyone know where I can find a pic? It seems kind of ridiculous that I can't find his photo anywhere on the internet.

So I got an email today about applying for financial aid even if I have not been accepted. Since I live in Asia, snail mail takes ages to get to me and with no online status check, I don't know the status of my application. Can I assume from this email that my application has at least not been rejected?

I'm in Asia too and got the e-mail. I was accepted via e-mail a few weeks earlier kind of strangley. Apparently they called my home and when they found out I wasn't there said they'd e-mail me but never did. Then I started getting e-mails from different students and Deans being like 'ZOMGZ Congrats on getting into UCLA!' I was confused and still haven't gotten an official accpetance but I assume it's going to stick haha.

Sorry I only gave a brief scan and was wondering if a lot of scholly offers have gone out? Also, anyone know what UCLA's fin aid is like?

P.S. - Sorry about that 1 year $1000 grant. It's kind of like a slap in the face. They might as well just throw some quarters at you when you go to ASW. Like do they really sit there and say...oh well the total cost is $200,000+ soooo $1000...yep that should do it.

Did anyone who has yet to hear from UCLA NOT get this e-mail? I was hoping it might be a positive sign of news to come (wishful thinking).

I found their fin-aid to be quite generous. Maybe the $1000/yr guy's parents are millionaires, iunno.

Definitely not. I think there's a game going in the admissions office of "Let's see how little money we can give Slansky and still have her come here."

Haha, I'm sorry :( . I hope I don't get played the same why by Duke, or else UCLA will win with their generosity.

An extra $1,000 is always welcome...

That said, you really have to look at the offer in perspective, and not just as "Oooh, a grand!" Schools generally offer scholarships as a way to curb tuition for students they want to entice away from other schools. $1,000 doesn't even register on the playing field when the cost of tuition is in the hundreds of thousands of dollars. Perhaps micro-scholarships are common place, but I've never heard of one quite that small.

Especially in consideration of the way they said they hoped they found the offer "competitive"...frankly, I'd be insulted.

Thanks in advance

Does he usually mention scholarships when he makes the phone call?
