You have a car? Prob Allston/Brighton assuming you don't hate hipsters. Cleveland Circle's even better, as it's closer, but prob more expensive. I'd rather live in the city than in Newton.newyorker88 wrote:Where do you guys think is the best place to live as a 1L?

My roommate goes to BC and we lived in Brighton w/ some on street parking, so he would drive to school every day. Some people live a bit closer in Newton tho.
About 10 minutes maybe? It's suuuuper close. Where I lived was kinda a neighborhood type area of Brighton, so there was free on street parking, you just left it anywhere. We found this place through a friend, but I know a lot of people who find places through craigslist boston, there's a brighton/allston/brookline tab if you look under that, you should find something. The apt was nice, quiet (he did all of his work there), decent size, just unfortunately a bit far from public transport (so going out was an adventure), but at least it was cheap (comparatively).newyorker88 wrote: I have a car. Was the apartment nice? Also, how did you find your apartment? thanks
It really depends what area of Allston/Brighton but Cleveland Circle is one of the closest parts, like 2.5 miles from the BC law campus. I live in Brighton now, Cleveland Circle to be precise, and it's a really nice area, maybe a little expensive but worth it. Lots of young professionals and BC students in the area. There are restaurants, 2 main bars, and much more nearby. Also close to 3 green line stations (the B, C, and D lines), and the BC shuttle drives all over the place here. Apparently you take this BC shuttle to the undergrad campus, and from there you take another shuttle to the law school campus. I found my place posted on craigslist, then got it through a realtor (city realty, I recommend them). If you can, start looking early. I got my place the weekend before I needed to move in and the options were limited. Also, if you have a car, getting an apartment with a spot is difficult and/or really expensive ($150/month for a spot is normal). But there is enough street parking, you just have to get a parking permit so you don't get a ticket. I can't speak as to how strict it is because I have my sticker (http://www.cityofboston.gov/parking/res ... /apply.asp).even2flow wrote:About 10 minutes maybe? It's suuuuper close. Some places offer parking spots with the rent, others cost extra money per month for private parking. Def make the trip up here to look at places, and you may wanna find roommates to offset the cost.
Yeah Cleveland Circle is a bit more expensive, but I heard the apt's are typically a bit smaller too? I dunno. My friend's gf lives in a house on a side street off of Beacon and it's expensive, but the apt is pretty nice. I think she has a dedicated parking spot (cause she essentially lives in a house) and it's spitting distance from City Side. If you're already sold on BC, now's the prime time to look. I'd schedule a trip soon (just not next weekend since it's marathon weekend) and take a look.lallygag wrote:It really depends what area of Allston/Brighton but Cleveland Circle is one of the closest parts, like 2.5 miles from the BC law campus. I wanted to know, because I've just had a very frustrating experience with BC's admissions office. I told them that I won't be home to open mail for another two weeks, the person who usually opens my mail had a leaky roof/mold during snow melt (and has moved far away from my house), and the deposit deadline at other schools I'm considering is April 15, and they still wouldn't tell me my decision OR agree to email a scan of the decision. I talked to three persons, including (unknowingly) Dean Jones, and they were all very cold and beauracratic. They said that it was fair for me to track down someone to open my mail, scan through all the letters, open the BC one (if it arrives), and then have them call me. All this when a simple e-mail from BC could have solved the entire situation. This leaves a horrid taste in my mouth regarding BC - every other school that I've had to contact regarding decisions recently has been very willing to make exceptions (telephone or email) - and given BC's reputation for friendliness, I am pretty appalled at how strident their policy is.
I agree. The two bad things I have to say about BC: 1. No cell service at all in the building, 2. Admissions department, from the people at the bottom to the people at the top are fairly cold/nonhelpful but I am comforted by the fact that now that I am in with a scholly I will likely not have to deal with them again. I once heard what I thought was very good advice--that the absolute last thing that one should judge a school by is their admissions department although this is obviously difficult because it is admissions that gives one their first impressions of a school.hellomoto wrote:The batches are mixed.84Sunbird2000 wrote:Is there any indication that all the 4/8s are WL, or does BC mix their batches?

I agree about some of your analysis about the school. The students themselves were super friendly and the atmosphere was great, but communicating with the administration has been fairly frustrating.
If I hadn't heard so many positive reviews of the school as a whole from current students, I would have called the admissions office and told them to take their rolling merit scholarships and shove them.I agree about some of your analysis about the school.
